Summer Holiday Car Hire: Avoid Hidden Fees and Save Money 2026

Summer holiday car hire can be a budget-friendly way to explore your destination, but hidden fees often inflate the final cost. A recent Which? survey found that one in eight travelers paid more than their initial quote. To help you drive a great deal, we break down how to compare offers, avoid costly add-ons, and secure unlimited mileage.

Compare Car Rental Options to Find the Best Summer Holiday Car Hire

Booking directly with a hire company doesn’t always guarantee the lowest price. Use aggregator sites like Carrentals.co.uk, Skyscanner, Kayak, and Zest Car Rental to compare rates across global destinations. Look for offers with free cancellation—most providers allow you to cancel up to 48–72 hours before pickup. This flexibility lets you rebook if prices drop; iCarhireinsurance data shows European hires for the same week in July were 16% cheaper than in January, potentially saving £100 on a week-long rental in Nice or Crete.

Key Features to Prioritize in Your Rental Agreement

Unlimited Mileage vs. Per-Mile Charges

Always choose a deal with unlimited mileage. Otherwise, you’ll pay for every extra mile, quickly adding up. Many aggregators let you filter by this option.

Fuel Policy: Return Full vs. Empty

Return the car with a full tank rather than empty. Rental companies often charge inflated fuel rates if you bring it back empty. Fill up at a nearby station before drop-off to save significantly.

Common Hidden Fees to Watch Out For

• Additional driver fees – adding a second driver can cost £10–£30 per day.
• Young driver surcharges – drivers under 25 often pay extra.
• GPS and child seat rentals – bring your own to avoid daily charges.
• Cross-border fees – driving into another country may incur a surcharge.
• Late return penalties – returning even 30 minutes late can trigger a full day’s charge.

Tips for Booking a Summer Holiday Car Hire at the Best Price

Book early but keep checking prices. Set alerts on aggregator sites for your dates. If you find a cheaper deal after booking, cancel and rebook—as long as free cancellation applies. Also, pay with a credit card that offers rental car insurance to potentially waive collision damage waiver costs. Compare the total price, not just the base rate, by reading the terms and conditions carefully.
