Legs McNeil, the punk icon who co-founded Punk magazine in 1975, vividly remembers the reaction from the original CBGB bands when they first heard the publication's name. "Absolutely no one wanted to be called a punk back then," he says. "Not even the Ramones. Johnny Ramone demanded that we cross out every reference to punk in an article about them." Fast forward a few years, and suddenly everybody wanted to be called a punk. "The Ramones started running around telling everyone, 'you know, we were the first punk band!'" McNeil recalls with a laugh.

McNeil's affinity for the punk attitude and ethos ran so deep that he was billed in the magazine as its "resident punk." As an illustration-heavy publication driven by the zany art of co-creator John Holmstrom, each issue presented McNeil as a consummately sly and seedy cartoon character, instantly transforming him into a real-life answer to Mad Magazine's mascot of snark, Alfred E. Neuman.

"My only qualification was that I was this huge fuck-up," McNeil says. "I was barely literate and I wasn't much of a writer at the time. But I was that guy." In a way, he still is. While the mission of this interview, which takes place at a diner in Brooklyn, is to delve into McNeil's new memoir, titled Resident Punk: How I Smoked, Drank and Stumbled My Way Through the Birth of Punk, the conversation inevitably veers into tales of booze, benders, and bedding famous women.

Legs McNeil on His Wild Ride Through Punk and Beyond

McNeil's memoir is a no-holds-barred account of his life as a self-proclaimed fuck-up who somehow found himself at the center of a cultural revolution. From his early days at Punk magazine to his later exploits as a writer and raconteur, McNeil's story is one of excess, humor, and unexpected insight.

One of the most colorful chapters involves his relationship with the late Sinéad O'Connor. "I could get laid every night of the week!" McNeil exclaims, recalling his dating exploits. But his time with O'Connor was different. "She was incredibly smart and talented," he says. "We had a lot of fun together, but it was also intense."

McNeil's drinking and drug use are central to the narrative. He describes benders that lasted for days, and a lifestyle that was as destructive as it was creative. "We were young and stupid," he says. "But we were also making something new."

The Birth of Punk: A Cultural Revolution

McNeil's account of the early punk scene is filled with anecdotes about now-legendary figures like the Ramones, Patti Smith, and Television. He paints a picture of a movement that was as much about attitude as it was about music.

"Punk wasn't just about the music," McNeil explains. "It was about not giving a shit. It was about doing things your own way, even if you had no idea what you were doing."

That ethos is captured in the pages of Punk magazine, which featured interviews, cartoons, and commentary that were as irreverent as they were influential. McNeil's persona as the "resident punk" made him a beloved figure in the scene.

Life After Punk: Writing, Drinking, and Surviving

After Punk magazine folded, McNeil went on to write for various publications and authored several books, including the oral history Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk. But his wild lifestyle continued, leading to health scares and personal struggles.

"I've been through a lot," he admits. "But I'm still here." His memoir is a testament to his resilience and his unique perspective on a pivotal era in music and culture.
