Mauricio Pochettino's US return is risky, expensive, and probably unnecessary, as the celebrated coach re-signs with US Soccer through 2030. After a successful but short first cycle, the decision to extend his contract raises questions about strategy and opportunity cost.
Why Pochettino's Return Is Risky
Pochettino’s initial tenure was marked by progress, but the World Cup exit to Belgium exposed persistent weaknesses. His new deal assumes continuity, yet the coach may leave for a club job if a top European opportunity arises, leaving US Soccer in a lurch.

The Financial Burden
Reports suggest Pochettino’s salary is among the highest for national team coaches. This investment could strain US Soccer’s budget, diverting funds from development programs that build long-term talent.
| Option | Cost | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Retain Pochettino | High | Potential early exit |
| Hire new coach | Moderate | Lack of continuity |
| Promote from within | Low | Inexperience |
What Pochettino Achieved
He energized the team, implemented a clear style, and delivered a historic 4-1 win over Paraguay. Yet, the knockout failure suggests a ceiling that may not be broken with the same approach.
Key Takeaways
- Pochettino’s return is a gamble on stability over innovation.
- The cost could limit other US Soccer investments.
- His commitment to 2030 is uncertain given club ambitions.
- USMNT needs fresh ideas to advance past round of 16.
Is It Necessary?
Many argue that a new voice could elevate the team further. With a talented generation, the federation might have explored other candidates who could bring a different tactical edge.
