Lucas Herbert came within five feet and three inches of making history at The Open, but a missed putt left him with a record-breaking 62 instead of a 61. The Australian golfer’s near-miss highlights the immense pressure of major championships, where even the best putters can falter when history is on the line. Herbert’s 62 tied the course record and put him atop the leaderboard at eight under par, but the sting of what could have been was palpable.
The Heartbreaking Miss
Herbert’s putt from just over five feet would have been the first 61 in men’s major championship history. Instead, he settled for a 62, joining an elite list of players who have achieved that score in a major. His caddie, Nick Pugh, summed up the tension: “When your heart is racing and you know what’s on the line, there’s probably just that little distraction.” Herbert himself expressed both disappointment and pride, saying, “It’s a pretty good problem to have, to be disappointed you shot 62.”
