Build a fantastic bed without screws with this tutorial! A common pattern when thinking about furniture design is to use screws or bolts to hold things together. But there is another way, a way that requires no fasteners, just good design.
There were about three constraints on the design:
- Bed mattress size (52″ × 28″ × 7″)
- Space the frame should fit into (72″ long) with 1/4″ clearance on each side.
- Ability to cut freely available materials: For this reason, a standard 3/4″ × 4′ × 8′ panel was selected.
The beauty of this idea, however, is that one can really personalize their bed with anything from children's names, to modifying more complex and intricate designs.
Another added advantage of this design is that, unlike most bunk beds on the market, it can be easily doubled, meaning you can have the steps on the left or right side by simply flipping a single panel. Speaking of ladders, they built in extra storage (they can accommodate 12″ books standing up) while also greatly increasing the overall strength of the bed frame. The addition of books provides additional weight, which initially attributes to the additional stability of the bed.
You would also be pleased to know that assembly of this bed requires absolutely no tools; only disassembly requires pliers (for safety reasons).
Speaking of safety, the bed was designed with the following in mind:
- Rails on both sides of the top bunk, except up to 15 inches at each end of the bed.
- The top edge of the rails shall be no less than 5 inches above the top surface of the mattress when using a mattress of the maximum thickness specified by the manufacturer's instructions (7″ in this case).
The guardrails must be attached so that they cannot be removed intentionally.
Keep reading in case you're here to find out how to build one for yourself!
Build a fantastic bed without screws with this tutorial:
Step 1: Materials

As noted above, this bed was designed to be as accessible as possible (in every sense of the word), and as such will require 5 to 6 sheets of standard 4′ × 8′ × 3/4″ plywood. After looking at the bed design, a friend recommended I add an extra support for the top bunk, which was a fantastic suggestion. and my son's bed is currently set up. With that in mind, the top bunk with support can hold from 150-250 lbs LBS, while without support it can handle up to 150 LBS. If you want your top bunk to have extra support, be prepared to use 6 sheets of plywood. Cut it out and experience for yourself.
Step 2: Cutting

This bed can be cut with any ShopBot/CNC tool that can accommodate 4’× 8′ × 3/4″ sheets of plywood.
Look at the many photos here to get an idea of the process. The CNC we used was pretty incredible, actually, and unlike a ShopBots where you have to control everything, this one uses a powerful vacuum system to hold the blade in place. This reduces the work by at least an hour, I guess... I won't go into details on how to use a CNC.
Once cut, you should consider rounding all sharp edges.
Step 3: Finishing

If your plywood comes finished on both sides, all you will need to do is round all the edges for a better using experience with a Wood Router, and then thoroughly sand all the edges. The better their work, the longer your bed will last.
Manually paint the other side of the plywood. I was recommended this BeesWax product by a friend who is very particular about productswith whom their children come into contact. It also makes your room smell nice for the first few weeks!
Be very careful with paint as the life of the bed depends largely on how well it protects the exposed wood. A bottle covers a single bed.
Step 4: 3D printing

This step is necessary to complete your bunk bed. You can download this file in Adobe Illustrator for the clips used to secure all the panels in place (to prevent them from coming off).
3D file
The idea, like the bed itself, is very simple:
- Insert panel
- Slide the panel down.
- Insert the clip into the remaining opening to secure it in place.
Be sure to check out the official store section in case you are interested in some 3D printer recommendations.
Step 5: Assemble

Make sure you have the 3D printable assembly clips before proceeding with assembling your bed. (Check the previous step for more information.)
In fact, assembly is so intuitive that most of you won't need a manual to "solve this puzzle."
Step 6: Accessories/Complements

In addition to the possibility of adding LED lighting to the environment, it makes the bed itself efficient (as seen in the photo), as an additional accessory, the bunk bed design includes two nightstands.
In case there is enough interest, consider creating several add-ons that will make your bed even more useful.
Step 7: Enjoy sleeping!

May your children have many restful nights!
