Building a Beautiful Gazebo in the Backyard, this rear gazebo is quite simple to put together. All together I spent about $500 to build it, and I only used a couple of tools. It has benches, a table and a trellis that provides privacy and makes it a little more cozy. This type of structure would be ideal for most backyards, and is a great place to eat and relax.

I'm using 4x6 for the posts, and I'm painting the base that will go to the ground, just to give it a little extra protection. then I put gravel in the holes and secured each post without mixing concrete, and this is much easier to use here.

Step 4: Building the foundation

Then I cut a bunch of wood for the base structure. And for this whole project, since I'm not in my own shop, I'm just using this jigsaw, and it's a good reminder that you really don't need many tools to build something like this.

I decided to paint the pieces that will also be placed directly on the ground, again, just to provide a little more protection. I'm not really a fan of pressure treated wood, so I decided to go this route.

I'm tying the base around the posts with a hammer and trying to make sure all the pieces are level, and sometimes I had to dig a little.

Step 5: The floor

For the floor I will put a bunch of 2x4's on top to create the joists, this will provide a base for the cedar boards.

To put all the cedar down, and this is base fence boards. I'm just screwing these boards into place.

Step 6: Preparing the roof

Okay, then the roof. First of all, I'm cutting the beams. I'm going with a 4x12 pitched roof. So I'm making the measurements, marking the cut for the bird's mouth, and then I'll cut them all out.

I then secure the roof pieces, making sure it is secured at the correct angles.

Step 7: The roof

Next, the OSB to cover the roof. Once that was secured, I also added the cedar board to the inside of the roof which will finish it off and add a nice look.

Step 8: Roofing

So the idea here, if it's not clear, is to build the roof completely on the ground, and then lift it into position and secure it to the posts. I'm just using roofing nails to attach the subfloor, starting at the ends and then laying it over the ridge.

Then down the drip edge, and this is to channel the water away from the roof.

Again, using roofing nails, and this was a little harder to get through and safer. Finally the tiles.

Step 9: Secure the Roof

I got help from some friends to secure the roof in place. I added metal straps, which will really add a lot of strength, so the wind won't lift it up. I also added some angled nails to connect the posts to the roof

Step 10: Seats!

I wanted to have seating around the gazebo so we could have plenty of seating for entertaining and just relaxing. I decided to actually build them just using 2x4 lumber and screws. I also made some brackets to secure the seats.

Step 11:

Then I measured the height on the posts, went with 19 inches, and then secured these brackets to each side. So I just repeated it on the other side. I decided to make a third bench for the other side here, so I used the same concept, but with a small notch on both sides it would fit properly.

Step 12: Secure the seats

When I knew everything fit, I took off all the benches and sanded them really well so they were nice and smooth, then secured them in place.

Step 13: Step of the front edge

The next thing I worked on was this cutting edge step. I thought this board was going to be stepped on as much as possible, so I wanted to plane the edge, and also put more support pieces in the gaps. I also put a piece of cedar to cover it, and sanded it too.

Step 14: Trellis

The other thing I wanted to do was put some supports on the sides so I could put up a trellis. We placed it on two sides, and simply screwed it into the brackets. It's nice and light anyway, and just adds a little bit of privacy, I also think it's a little more cozy.

Step 15: Base of the table

Then, finally, a table.

This table will feature a pedestal base so there aren't too many legs in the way. First I am building a basic frame for the table that I will attach the base to. The base will have mirrored support that will connect it to the table and floor joists.

Step 16: Add Cedar

I screwed cedar boards onto the top, then sanded them nice and smooth. I then secured the bottom of the joists to the floor with some long screws. I finally finished the table and benches with some polyurethane to provide additional protection.

Step 17: Final Touches

At this point, we added a little more gravel throughout the structure to drain water over the winter and keep it clean and tidy. And I also put some flower baskets.
