This corner cabinet is designed for the standard 36" x 36" corner with 34 1/2" height and works with existing cabinet designs with overlay/full front frames.
Materials:
- 1 sheet of 3/4″ plywood torn to 22 3/4″ wide, 8 feet long (we'll call these 1x24s in this plan) PS: Keep the scrap in the center!
- 1 – 1×2 @ 8 feet long, 1 – 1×4 @ 8 feet long (for supports), 2 – 2×4 @ 8 feet long
- Wood glue
- 120 grit sandpaper
- 1 1/4 inches of finishing nails
- 1-1/4" Pocket Hole Screws
- 1 sheet of 1/4" plywood - 1
Tools:
- Tape measure
- Velocity square
- Drill
- Circular saw
- Miter saw
- Nails
- Hammers
Cut List:
Box:
- 3 – 1×24 @ 31 «
- 1 – 1×24 @ 33 3/4″ (make another one for shelves), 1 – 1×24 @ 11 3/4 «
- 2 – 1×4 (or scrap ply) @ 33 3/4″, 2 – 1×4 (or scrap ply) @ 11 3/4”, 2 – 1/4” plywood @ 35 1/4” x 34 1/2”
Front frame:
- 2 – 1×2 @ 31″, 2 – 1×2 @ 10 1/2″, 2 – 1×2 @ 11 1/4", 2 – 2×4 @ 35 1/4"
- 4 – 2×4 @ 17 1/2″
- 2 – 2×4 @ 14 3/4″, 2 – 3/4″ thick x 10 3/4″ x 30 1/4″
Step 1 Instructions:The main thing to remember in this plan is to drill all of your pocket holes first. And if you are attaching face frames with pocket holes, drill them before assembly. One of our very bright readers suggested drilling pocket holes for the front frame hardware on the outside because they will be covered anyway and the inside will be completely finished. Good thing!
Attach the bottom to the sides with glue and 1 1/4" pocket screws.
Step 2 instructions:
Once you've created the main box, it's time to add some supports. These could be the 1x4s or scrap plywood strip that is torn into 1x24 strips.
Step 3 instructions:
Now it's time to add the bottom for the adjoining side. You will need to use 1 1/4" pocket screws and 3/4" pocket holes to attach them.
Be sure to drill pocket holes to attach the front and side frame.
This seam will be fully compatible with the base in later steps.
Step 4 instructions:
Now attach the side.
Step 5 instructions:
And then the side supports.
Step 6 instructions:
First build the face frame and then attach it. Remember that the sides stick out by 1/4" to give you some space.“wiggle” factor when installing cabinets.
Step 7 instructions:
Build bases separately as well, drilling holes to attach to the bottom of the cabinet. Attach in place.
Step 8 instructions:
Plywood the backs, attaching them with glue and 1 1/4" finish nails and 3/4" finish nails when nailing into 3/4" thick boards.
Step 9 instructions:
There are different ways you can make shelves, but I personally loved them this way. Maybe because we always have a 50 pound bag of rice waiting to find a home? I recommend securing the shelf in place with screws rather than pins simply due to the size of the shelf.
I saw IKEA cabinets that stagger straight shelves so they overlap only at the conres and thought that was a clean and simple solution too. It gives you some tall storage, some short as well.
Step 10 instructions:
When installing cabinets in your kitchen, I recommend attaching backers to the walls to support heavier countertops.
Step 11 instructions:
These doors are sized for stacked front frame cabinets. Space between cabinets is sized for narrow profile hinges, 3/4" x 3" – see diagram below
Step 12 instructions:
There are other types of hinges, this is the most basic installation. If you choose a different hinge type, you may need to adjust the width of the door for a better fit. My recommendation is to make anything out of 3/4" plywood - which is something that has something!!! – and cut the hands off the doors and adjust until you are satisfied before making the doors.
Step 13 instructions:
This is the last and easiest step how the cabinets line up with other models. Gaps between doors and drawers are at 1/2" throughout.
