Do it yourself! Modern Wooden Slat Bench! Some consider it one of the most iconic pieces of furniture of the 20th century. The most surprising thing is that although the design is about 70 years old, it has not been dated, and will look great in any contemporary home.

Step 1: Design and tools

Therefore, the bank has two main parts:

1. Two trapezoidal legs
2. A slat top made with interlocking half-round joints. T

The Imperial measurement system has been used.

So I have tried to provide measurements and dimensions in both metric and imperial. Two caveats: I don't "think" about Imperial, so if I've transposed a measurement I probably wouldn't have noticed. If any measurement seems overly massive or small, just assume I got it really wrong. Additionally, my dimensions to metric have been converted using an online tool. So there may be some slight rounding as a result, hopefully nothing serious enough to kick someone out.

Tools:

In theory, if you were good with hand tools, this build could be done with a hand saw, chisel, etc. But… I'm not really a hand tool guy.

• I used: jobsite table saw (with a cross sled to make precise, square cuts), 19mm (3/4″) chisel
• Hammer
• Drill
• Drill bits and countersink bits,
• Clamps
• Ratchet strap (I know, you're probably wondering why, but more on that later)
• Electric sander
• Hand plane
• Basic design tools (squares, tape and pencil).

That's all. Use proper safety equipment if using power tools and work safely.

Materials:

• 16 Wood Screws
• Wood glue
• Wood finish
• Sandpaper
• Polyurethane
• Wax (optional)

Step 2: Materials and measurements

Wood: I used an Australian wood called Victorian ash (which is not actually an ash, but a species of eucalyptus) to construct the slatted top of the bench. This is a fairly pale wood with slight shades of pink and gray.

If I lived in the US or Europe, I would probably go for a pale hardwood for the top slats; In my research I saw versions of this bench with maple or birch. The leg assemblies are made of pine.

I bought the wood completely milled and square on all sides, so no further preparation or planing was necessary.

Top:

• 12 Long Ribbons: cut to 122 cm length, 19 mm (3/4″) x 42 mm (1 5/8″)
• 2 Side Rails: cut to 45.6 cm length (17 15/16″), 19 mm (3/4″) x 42 mm (1 5/8″)
• 1 Middle Support Rail: Cut to 17 15/16″ (45.6 cm) long, 1 5/8″ (42 mm) x 1 5/8″ (42 mm)
• Legs: (Note: At least 5 cm or about 2 inches, so you have some wiggle room to make miter saw cuts)
• 2 Lengths of pine (bottom of trapezoidal leg assembly): cut to 35.5 cm length (14″), 19 mm (3/4″) x 57 mm (2 1/4″)
• 4 Lengths of pine (sides) – Cut to 36.5 cm long (14 3/8″), 19 mm (3/4″) x 57 mm (2 1/4″)
• 2 Lengths of pine (top of trapezoidal leg assembly): Cut to 45.6 cm length (17 15/16″), 19 mm (3/4″) x 57 mm (2 1/4″)

Step 3: Half-round joints-long slats

EThis part of the construction basically involves making a lot of interlocking rabbets so that the opposing slat pieces can fit together perfectly.

I cut into the long slats first. All of the slats for the bench top are 42mm high (13/16″) lengths of wood, meaning I needed to cut each gap to be exactly half that amount.

I set the height of my blade on the table saw by making cuts on one side of a piece of wood that was also 42mm high, then inverting the piece and cutting again. The first photo shows a series of test cuts, what I wanted was for a thin piece of wood to sit between the two alternative cuts.

I was conservative, as if I cut the rabbets too deep, the half-lap joints will still work from an alignment perspective, but the wood will not sit flush on the vertical axis. So I left a little fat, knowing I'll come back after my cuts to adjust and fine-tune the fit with a chisel.

19 mm (3/4″) wide gaps should be made at both ends of the long pieces of batten, with another wider rabbet placed dead center 42 mm wide (1 5/8″).

To make things quicker and ensure alignment, I set the top 12 slats on a crosscut sled on the table saw, with my cut lines marked on the top side.

I made a successive series of closely spaced cuts to hog most of the material for the markdowns (a slot blade would be great if I had one).

The remaining thin slices were tapped with light taps of a hammer and cleaned with a chisel.

Step 4: End joints and middle lanes

I then repeated a similar process to cut in the end and mid rails. Once again, I clamped these parts together on my crosscut sled and made about a million successive passes to monopolize all 12 spaces.

The design is super easy: these rebates are 19mm (3/4″), each evenly spaced at 19mm (3/4″). Since there are an even number of spaces, you can start your design and cut from either end.

Step 5: Fit Test

At this point I tried to put the long rails and the middle and end support pieces together to test the fit.

I needed to remove a little more depth in all the spaces to get the perfect fit, but this was easily achieved with a sharp chisel.

I also carefully labeled all the parts during the process so as not to mess it up.

Step 6: Legs

The cuts were made on a table saw with a miter gauge.

This is by far the most difficult step, due to the different parts and angles. Take your time, measure often, check often and my best advice: carefully mark all the individual parts.

To achieve the desired internal angles of 82 and 98 degrees within the trapezoidal shape of the legs, cut as follows:

• Bottom of trapezoidal leg assembly: cut to 35.5 cm length (14″), 49 degree miters on each end.
• Top of trapezoidal leg assembly: cut to 17 15/16″ length (45.6 cm), 41 degree miters on each end.
• Vertical/lateral parts of trapezoid: cut to 36.5 cm length (14 3/8″): one end mitered at 49 degrees and the opposite end mitered at 41 degrees.

Having made a rough layout to test the angles (all good!), I applied glue to the mitered angles of the wood and used a ratchet strap to hold everything tight and in place.

I used a small wooden wedgea to prevent the ratchet from digging into the wood, and I squeezed it hard to apply clamping force all around. The result was some truly fantastic articulations with virtually no gaps.

My only regret is that I didn't tape the inside of the corners to prevent the glue from coming out.

This was a problem as I couldn't get a power sander on the sharp angles on the inside corners of the legs and had to sand by hand to remove some of the glue which was also painfully slow.

Step 7: Fit Test No. 2

Now seemed like a good time for another dry fit and a rough layout of the components. It was starting to look like a real piece of furniture.

Step 8: Joints

To strengthen the mitered joints in the legs, I made some cuts with a basic template. Basically, it is just a simple cradle that helps support a workpiece to allow shortcuts to be made into a corner or joint.

I then glued thin strips of hardwood, which were cut flush with a small saw and chisel after the glue had dried. I'm not sure if this dramatically improved joint strength, but it was a small step.

Step 9: Painting

Walnut oil was applied to the paws, about 3 coats, followed by a wipe moistened with polyurethane. The goal was to imitate ebonized legs. It's not a required step - you could easily use paint (any color you want) or just go with a natural finish.

Step 10: Assembly

I did this the hard way: clamp and glue each part individually. I later discovered that it could have been much easier to simply pre-drill and screw all the components in from the bottom.

Step 11: Sanding

There was a slight slight variation in the thickness of some of the slatted pieces, which I fixed with a hand plane.

I then used an electric sander, going through a series of grits from 80 to 220 to get a nice, smooth finish and remove any rough edges or splinters.

Finally I used a level to check that there were no major undulations or twists in the bench. If the wood is well prepared and dry, this should not be a major concern

Step 12: Applying a finish

The upper part received two layers of polyurethane

Step 13: Leg stability

Each leg was placed 90 degrees to the long edge of the bench and secured in place. The legs are placed about 15 cm (6″) from each end.

You must be meticulous when lining up the screw locations to hit the center of the slats. I used 8 screws per leg, which was probably too many, but I wanted the fixation to be super strong to minimize any potential shifting when people used it as a bench.

Step 14: Ready!

My own piece of mid-century modern furniture, which I would say is probably just as well made and for less money than a knockoff, and is now ready to take pride of place in our living room.

This is in no way intended to boast (as my woodworking skills are adequate but not spectacular), but I can safely say that this is the nicest thing to come out of my workshop. Thanks for reading!
