How to Install a Shower Enclosure, plumbing and carpentry skills are required to successfully install a shower enclosure. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and seek professional advice if necessary. If you are renovating a bathroom or planning a new addition to your home and are ready to install a shower stall, there are a few steps to follow.
Materials:
- Variable speed drill and screws
- Tape measure
- Level
- Structural timber (if applicable)
- Teflon tape
- Pipe wrench
- Waterproof drywall
- Silicone
Step 1: Planning and organizing

Determine the ideal location. Whether you are installing a shower stall to save space in a new bathroom or to replace a bathtub, the stall should be located near hot and cold water pipes, and you should be able to access drain pipes.
Step 2: Determine the ideal location

A quick Internet search or a stroll through the plumbing aisles of a home improvement store will reveal the different types of shower stalls on the market. There are a variety of options available, including ones with features like a bench to sit inside, shapes ranging from rectangles to semi-circles, and sizes to suit any need. That said, there are also some specific varieties, and the differences between them can affect the installation process.
- One-piece prefabricated showers are complete units, usually made of fiberglass or acrylic. They tend to be more expensive than other shower sets, and some also claim that they can be more difficult to install. As you could probably guess, the entire unit can be a bit bulky, and for that reason difficult to carry through doorways or stairs. On the plus side, they tend to be solidly built and easier to clean.
- Multi-piece interlocking units typically come in a set of four to six large pieces, including the shower pan (the base area where you would stand in the shower and that connects to the drain), wall liners (for the side(s) where the unit will be mounted along the bathroom wall), side sections (which will not be placed along the bathroom wall), and a door. Many of these "kits" are considered easy to assemble and generally cost much less than one-piece units.
Step 3: Materials

There is an extensive list of materials that will need to be purchased to complete this project.
- Pipes and plumbing accessories. Not only do you need to make sure you have enough pipe, you also need to make sure you get the right parts that will allow you to connect the new pipes to the existing ones.
- A shower unit or kit.
- Waterproof putty/sealant. It's probably best to get a silicone-based sealant or caulk, a variety known for its water resistance.
- Tools, such as wrenches and screwdrivers.
Step 4: Read the instructions that come with your shower unit or kit

While some provide very little detail, most will include instructions explaining how the shower will fit into place. Even those that don't directly explain the process you need to follow will certainly suggest what prerequisites are necessary for installation.
Step 5: Installing the shower

Clear and prepare the desired shower location. It may be preferable to remove bathroom tile or other floor coverings and install the shower directly on the base of the floor itself. You should also identify the proper location for the drain hole: measure the shower pan to determine the location and cut a hole in the floor.
- If your pipe enters through a wall and not, for example, an area of the basement where the pipes are exposed, you should break out portions of the wall. Obviously, this should be one of your first steps.
Step 6: Build aframe to support the cabin (if applicable)

Some shower kits will require you to build a frame to support the shower pan or even reinforce an entire prefabricated unit. Often the unit will need to be bolted into place, so you must build the necessary structures that will allow you to do this.
- For some units, at least part of the frame construction will need to be completed after the shower stall has been moved into place. Read the instructions carefully.
- Some multi-piece shower kits come with a frame of sorts that will be used to support the sides. Again, review the instructions that come with your kit before installing it to determine how your shower stall will fit in your bathroom.
Step 7:Install the shower tray or prefabricated unit.

Install the shower tray/prefabricated unit. Slide the tray or drive into place and attach it with screws.
Step 8:Install the plumbing (if you haven't already).

Install the plumbing (if you haven't already). For some installations, this may have been the first task required. For others, it should be near the end. Follow these steps:
- Turn off the main water supply.
- Using traditional plumbing methods, install the hot water and cold water pipes so that they connect with the faucet handle holes in the shower stall. Attach the appropriate threaded extension tube to the shower head using Teflon tape and a pipe wrench. Install the faucet handles and shower head. Turn on the main water supply and check for leaks.
- Connect the drain lines. Secure the drain pipe to the drain kit (comes with the unit or purchased separately). The drain should be sealed with plumber's putty and held tightly in place to prevent leaks. (For more information on installing plumbing in a bathroom, see the guides here.)
Step 9: Install the shower stall sides (if applicable).

Multi-piece shower kits will require this step, but it's one that can really be delayed until the project is almost complete. If you don't want to work on the plumbing inside a small shower, choose to leave this step for last.
For some kits, the wall-mounted side will need to be screwed into place, while others simply recommend that you use heavy-duty caulk. Keep this in mind when purchasing your sealants, as some can also be used as adhesives.
Step 9: Finish the project

Cover any exposed structures with water-resistant drywall and seal all joints that will be exposed to water with silicone-based caulk. Add texture and paint it any way you want. Place the shower door or a curtain on it.
