Are you looking to renew your garden? So here we will teach you how to make a beautiful secret garden to make that part of your home look incredible.
This one is for the girls and boys who want something more inspiring than a playhouse in the backyard. A perfect place to dream and marvel and let your imagination fly.
Who wouldn't want their own secret garden? A little private oasis made specifically with all your favorite things. It sounds like a little piece of heaven to me. Which is exactly why I made it a reality for my little girl. 🙂
Step 1: Making the perimeter

As a first step we have to find a perimeter to make a beautiful secret garden. We have a chain link fence that isn't pretty to look at, so we glued a green trellis to those sides. For the rest of the perimeter we planted arborvitae and installed a door. Tall enough to feel private to her, but small enough that we could easily see if we wanted to. We made steps using the same blocks we used for the retaining wall, so it worked perfectly with our patio. You would never know that there is a lush garden behind it. 🙂
The next part is planning the different elements you want. For my daughter, I knew I wanted a living room, a fairy garden, a fountain, a picnic area, and a game to play. I've broken down these main elements into steps for those who want to recreate them. There are so many different things you could do. If you had more space, you could make trees, a swing set, koi ponds, hammocks, bigger lawn games. So many fun ideas
Step 2: Make the chess board

One of my favorite elements is the built-in chess board (or checkerboard). It's nice to watch with an Alice in Wonderland feel, and as an added bonus, it works as entertainment.
For this project you will need:
- 1 Roll of grass
- 32 6″ Squares
- 24 Rocks
- A red, black, yellow and white paint.
- Extra rolls of grass for a surrounding lawn
To begin, cut the grass into 6″ wide strips with a serrated kitchen knife. If you use a 2x4, you can keep your line straight. Use your paver as a guide. Place the paver on top of the strip and trim it to 32 squares of grass.
To install it, you will want to place them on the ground in a square with 8 rows, alternating the paver and the grass. Once you've placed it nice and even, you'll add tablespoons of topsoil under each square of grass. Add enough so they are level with the pavers. Add more grass around the edges of the checkerboard. When you have finished watering the grass really well. Be sure to keep the grass moist for the first week. Especially on hot days.
Step 3: Stone Bugs

This being a garden and all I opted to make ladybugs and bumblebees for the chess board pieces. This is a very fun project to do with the children. You can use them for checkers, tic tac toe or as a garden decoration.
You will need:
- 24 Oval Rocks
- 1 red paint
- Also a black paint
- A yellow and white painting
- Brushes
- 3-6 Qtips
The first step is to wash the rocks very well and let them dry.
Ladybugs:
- Start by painting the rock red leaving a small portion on the top of the head.
- Then paint the top black for the head.
- Using your Qtip make black dots throughout the red area.
- Then use another Qtip and make two white dots for the eyes.
- Using a small paintbrush or toothpick, make two small black dots in the center of the white dots
- Let it dry and that's it.
Bees:
- Start by painting the rocks yellow, but leave a portion at the top for the head.
- Then paint the head black.
- Then paint black stripes over the yellow area.
- Now using Qtip make two white dots on the head.
- Then, using a small paintbrush or toothpick, make two small black dots in the center of the white dots
- Let it dry and that's it.
If you want you can paint a crown at the bottom of the rocks. When they "get you" you can simply flip the rock over.
Step 4: DIY Font

I wanted a small fountain but they are quite expensive and I couldn't find one I liked. Instead of buying one, I ended up making it from a simple garden pot.
You will need:
- Pump kit
- Pot of your choice
- JB welding – Water welding
- Drill bit that is as wide as the plug.
Steps:
- First you will drill a hole in the center of the bottom of the pot. This is where the pump plug will go through so it is hidden.
- Put the pump plug through the hole and seal it with jb solder. You can also use putty or quick cement.
- You can probably take extra precautions to waterproof it, but jb welding has worked great for me.
- Put the rest of the pump together and fill with water.
- Make sure water never goes under the pump. Plug it in and enjoy.
Step 5: Fairy and Flower Garden

TryYou've probably seen fairy gardens all over the place. Now the figurines are available everywhere. Mini houses, chairs, benches, swings, pots, fairies. Everything you can imagine and they have it. Joann's fabrics have a great selection and are always on sale.
We start with a large pot and add soil to the top. I used chickens and hens on the sides with moss in the middle. I planted a small pine tree starter that I found and added some stones for a water effect. This garden is out and has thrived on its own. It has changed over time and still looks great. My daughter fixes it every time she is in the garden.
For the rest of the plants in the garden I chose my favorite daughters. She would want a rainbow of colors and lots of roses. I tried placing them in places with less contact or removing thorns that are too close. I used clematis and climbing vines along the netting. Petunias, delphiniums and hydrangeas for summer color. Lavender at the entrance to fill the place with a pleasant fragrance. I like to be able to change the flowers, so I keep the area long for annuals and bulbs.
This part is totally subjective and always depends on your area and the sun/shade in your chosen area.
Step 6: Lighting

You may be surprised to know that your Secret Garden is even better at night. It's so much fun for kids to have a safe place to hang out after dark. It makes summer even better.
I bought outdoor globe lights at the end of the season, so they were very cheap. They have clips on them that I attached to the lattice. I made sure the end of the plug was in the same area as the power plug. Then I used an outdoor extension cord with multiple plugs. I buried the cord so you don't even know it's there and it's easy to turn it on and off.
We also have solar lights. This is another way to illuminate it. My little one likes to take them out and use them like a sword, so we hid them from him. Good for my daughters haha.
I painted glitter rocks in the dark paint and scattered them all over the garden, but they didn't work well. However, I'm sure it would work if you used a better quality gloss on the dark paint.
Step 7: Children's bench with secret compartment

I wanted a good bench that would fit a couple of kids. And I'm pretty sure it's a requirement to have a secret compartment in your secret garden, so we added that element to the bench. Not only can you put top secret things in it, but you can also store the ladybugs and bee pieces.
We are not carpenters by any means, but carpentry has many similarities to sewing. We basically made it up as we went along and using material we had around the house along with something we bought new. I will do my best to describe how I do it.We started it for those who want to recreate it. Hopefully it makes sense to you.
To make this bench you will need:
- (7) 4″ Wide Cedar Fence Boards
- (2) 2×4
- (1) 1×3… (1) 2×2 (that's what we had there)
- A Box of 1 1/4″ wood screws
- A box of 1 1/2″, 4d nails
- (4) Corner Brackets
- (2) Strap Hinges
- (8) Strong connecting straps
Steps:
- First you will make the frame of the bench. We designed the frame around the storage compartment. Using the 2x4s, the two back legs are 26″ and the two front legs are 20″. The front legs will be higher than the seat to make an armrest. The frame width piece is 12″ and the length pieces are 25.5″. Use Simpson's Strong Ties and Corner Brackets to secure the frame together.
- For the base of the storage area you will need (7) pieces of 12″ fence board. AND (2) 25.5″ 2×2. Place the 2x2s under the frame, this will be what you screw the 12″ pieces into as well.
- For the top of the seat, you will need (7) fence boards cut to 13″, and (2) 1x3s cut to 25.5″ Attach all fence boards to the 1x3s. Then screw the hinges and fix them to the chair.
- For the back of the chair, you will need (9) fence boards cut to 15.5″, (2) 25.5″ 1x3 pieces. You make the back part similar to the way you made the bottom part. Screw the pieces together as shown in the picture.
- Before attaching the back of the chair, it will be nailed into the armrests. For the armrests you will need (2) pieces of board about 14″. Nail into the edge of the armrest on each end panel 3.25″ above the bottom.
- To attach the back, you will need to leave at least a 1″ gap above the bottom for the bench to open properly. Nail the two end pieces together and secure the back with the strong ties.
- No, you will nail the edges of the armrest to the front 2x4 legs. Sand and stain to your liking. I haven't decided on the stain color and I still have to sand, but you get the gist. Hopefully the photos help too.
Step 8: Yard Check

When we started the secret garden project, we were in the middle of giving our backyard a complete overhaul. These are the before and after photos. It used to be filled with a big hill. My husband removed part of the hill and put up a retaining wall. He leveled the new patio space and we planted grass seed. Behind that retaining wall was a 10 to 13 foot slope that I have slowly been designing. This is where we use a section for your secret garden.
Step 9: Enjoy your oasis 🙂
