How to Make a Garden Planter with a Bowling Ball, having all the available tools and materials on hand, I proceeded to make a functional pot using a plastic container and a bowling ball as molds.
After having done several projects using concrete, it is now easy to do something like this.
Step 1: Materials and tools

Materials and tools necessary to complete this project. plastic bowl, bowling ball, concrete and some decorations.
Step 2: Plan for drainage

I know that you absolutely must provide drainage holes in any closed pot, otherwise the plant roots will rot in the water that pools at the bottom of the pot.
To provide that drainage in my pot, I decided to use a piece of PVC pipe cut to about 2 inches.
This will sit at the bottom of the mold and support the bowling ball, and will allow for 2 inch sides, provide the necessary drainage, and make drilling into the concrete later unnecessary.
Step 3: Mix the concrete and pour into the mold

After coating both the bowling ball and the plastic container with a very light coating of vegetable oil or a Pam-type spray, the mold is ready to be filled.
Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions and fill the mold. I used 8 soup cans filled with concrete to complete this pour.
Step 4: Decorate the concrete at this point

I decided to decorate the rim of my bowl with glass beads available at any craft store. We had some on hand, so we decided to use them.
You can wait up to 45 minutes to do this step, but I went ahead and finished it as soon as I poured the concrete.
A simple design was used, but tried to place them in a way that is pleasing to the eye.
Step 5: Set overnight before removing the bowling ball

The concrete should be set to the point where removing the ball will not break the sides of the mold.
After at least 24 hours or more, simply lift the ball out of the mold.
Step 6: Let the mug dry for a week with water in it

I found that by leaving the ball in the plastic bowl mold, I could fill the bowl with water, and that would effectively allow for proper drying.
I'm not sure about a week's schedule, but I decided to go that route, since there would be no harm in waiting.
Step 7: After a week, remove the plastic bowl

I was a little afraid, but concrete never ceases to surprise me!
After removing the plastic container, the project was essentially complete.
Now plant the container and place it in the garden.
Step 8: Select Plants and Add to Planter

I used a packaged cactus mix because I wanted the best type of soil to add the succulents.
By placing a screen over the hole in the pot, soil and plants are added as in standard potting practice.
Step 9: Some shots of the new container in the garden

I think the choice of succulents was correct for this type of container. And the bowl fits wonderfully in my succulent garden!
