When it comes to repairing a large window or an old wooden window we will find ourselves using putties and tips, it was the way in which glass was previously installed. Now there are more modern and easy-to-use products.
Recommendations:
- Remove the window with hinges included.
- Clean the window frames, removing stuck paint or varnish and lowering the hinge area so that it does not hinder the installation of the new ones.
Procedure:
#1. Remove the glass
Remove the glass by removing the putty with a chisel. If it has silicone, cut it with a cardboard knife and remove the tips with pliers. Disassemble the glass very carefully using suction cups.

These suction cups are used to move materials that have smooth surfaces such as glass. They can lift up to 50 kg of load. To keep them in good condition they must be cleaned with alcohol.
#2. Sanding
As the varnish is peeling it will be easily removed with a belt sander. First, use a coarse No. 40 sandpaper, then 80 and finally 180. In the recesses you have to remove the varnish with gouges and a scraper.

#3. Cover imperfections
Imperfections in the wood can be covered with wood putty, there are different colors that resemble the natural tone of the wood. It is applied with a spatula, spreading it to remove the excess. Once it dries, sand it to improve the finish.

#4. Place a Jonquil
Some windows are not designed to have double glass, so a 9 x 9 mm bead must be fixed in the center of the interior. It is glued with cold glue and then nailed with ¾ nails. The glass will go on each side of the bead, so the air space will be 9 mm.

#5. Protect wood
Apply with a brush a stein to the water that has fungicidal protection and water repellent. Also, if you apply one with dye, the pigments will provide greater UV protection.

Stein is a wood protector that leaves the pores open, since it is absorbed by the wood, it does not leave a layer that closes them, this allows the wood to continue breathing. There are water-based steins and others that are diluted with solvents. In both cases, its protection is fungicidal, anti-termite, water-repellent and resistant to UV rays.
#6. Fix the glass
Put a neutral silicone bead inside the window. With the help of the suction cups, mount the glasses on the silicone and pass the wet finger to smooth and remove the excess. While the silicone dries, fix some tips to be able to turn the window.

Turn the window over and repeat the process to glue the second side of the glass.
#7. Place the window
Fix hingeswith bearing on the edge of the window and place the window in the frame, screwing the hinges.
