Invisible Wine Bottle Rack, a simple and quick-to-build rack, is a great way to store wine and a fun way to recycle some empty bottles. I designed this rack for a small wall in my kitchen, but you can make yours as big as you want. Please note that once loaded with full bottles, it is not lightweight and must be securely anchored to the wall.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SAFETY: One of the steps is to stick dowels into the necks of the wine bottles. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when doing this. There is a chance that a bottle could break and spew fragments. Other than that step, this build is very simple and safe, just use good judgment and wear the necessary safety equipment when drilling and sawing.
Step 1: Materials and tools

Materials:
- 4’x4′ sheet of plywood.
- Tube construction adhesive.
- Wood finish
- A 4′ long ¾” dowel
- Paper towels or napkins
Tools:
- Rubber mallet
- Drill
- ¾” drill bit
- Tape measure
- Carpentry square
- Pen
- A sheet of 150-grit sandpaper
- Circular saw, jig saw or table saw to size plywood
- Pencil
- Ten clean, empty wine bottles
- Saw to cut the tenons or pins
Step 2: Design

Place the bottles right side up on the board and arrange them so that there is a ¼” space between each bottle from left to right.
Use two bottles on your first row to establish the distance between the two rows.
The photos show the design I used, but due to the difference in bottles, or for aesthetic reasons, your design may be different than mine.
Once you have set out your bottles, mark the center of each bottle in the bottom row and mark the center of the two bottles on the right of each row.
Use your square and continue these lines both above and across.
You should now have a grid with 10 intersections marking the center of your bottles and where you will need to drill for the pegs.
Define the outer shape of the piece with your square and cut it out. You can choose to make your own a different shape than mine, which is great, but the grid should be similar to the one in the photo.
Step 3: Drilling

Now you need to drill the 10 holes with a drill bit.
Note that you will only drill 5/8″ into the 3/4″ thick plate, leaving a large surface area for glue, so you must use a Forstner bit.
These bits drill beautiful holes in plywood and leave a flat bottom, but you need to set the depth.
I used a drill press with a depth stop, but if you are using a hand drill, measure 5/8″ up on the Forstner bit and wrap a piece of tape around the shaft.
Drill the holes while looking from the side and when you reach the tape you know you have reached the depth.
Step 4: Finish preparation

Use sandpaper to remove pencil marks and prepare the wood for finishing, then wipe away any dust.
Before finishing, place a small paper towel in each dowel hole.
This prevents the finish from entering the hole, whichand would inhibit the adhesion of the glue.
Paint the board and let it dry.
Step 5: Insert the pins

Cut ten 2 5/8″ long slats with a handsaw or chop saw.
Mark a 5/8″ line on each dowel. This mark will establish the depth of distance to drive into the neck of the bottle.
This part is dangerous, so be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves.
I haven't broken a bottle, but you are going to drive nails into the necks of the bottles, so if one breaks it it could be very dangerous.
Use a rubber hammer to drive the pins into the bottle until you reach the mark, leaving 5/8″ exposed.
You shouldn't have to hammer hard to insert the pin, just a few hard taps.
If the sandpaper seems difficult to use and you sand a bit of the block, just don't sand above the 5/8″ mark because this part goes towards the board, not the neck.
Step 6: Glue

Make sure your board is dry, remove the paper towels, and place it somewhere stable. Once you have glued and placed all the bottles, the board should not move until the adhesive/glue is completely dry.
Completely cover the ends of the dowel with construction adhesive and then seat each bottle in its hole.
The adhesive will come out of the top, just wipe it off before it dries.
Step 7: Installation

Once the adhesive/glue has hardened, install the shelf on the wall. This unit is heavy so I used two 2 1/2″ long #8 wood screws making sure to tap into the bolts to hang the shelf.
Depending on the number of bottles you use and the size of your board, you may need to use even more clips - just use good judgment. Greetings!
