Learn How to Easily Add a Great Window Frame, there is nothing warmer than the morning sun coming through an open window. After many winter months with the house closed, the fresh spring air is welcome. When my sister moved into her house, she was a little indifferent to the basic decorations on her window.
After some rummaging around, she enlisted my help to put the finishing touches on those boring old windows.
Now, let's add some decorations to those drab windows!
Step 1: Parts and Tools

Depending on the number of windows you want to frame, you will need different amounts of wood. We framed six windows on a Saturday and used three 4′ x 8′ sheets of 3/4-inch MDF cut lengthwise with a table saw. We have prospects of making more window frames in the future, so cutting wood into specific quantities was not a priority.
Materials:
- 3/4″ MDF
- 7/16″ x 1/2″ MDF
- 1 1/2″ top edge
Tools:
- Table saw
- Air compressor
- Nail gun
- 16 2″ Nails
- Table saw
- Jigsaw
- Carpenter's square
Step 2: Window sill

Measure the window opening from left to right and add 7 inches. Take the 5 1/2 inch boards and cut to the length mentioned above.
Note: 5 1/2 inches was chosen because it is 2 1/2 inches wider than the original sill. If yours is different, a change here might be in order.
Measure 3 1/2 inches from each end and mark the depth of the window sill to make a square (see image 4).
Using the jigsaw, cut the two squares from each end and test the fit on the window sill. If everything looks good, sand and nail into place.
Step 3: Sides

Measure from the top of the window sill to the top of the window on each side. Knowing that houses are never perfectly square, remember to measure both sides.
Take the 2 1/2 inch wide boards and cut both sides to size.
Sand and use nails instead.
Step 4: Upper

Measure at the top of the window on the outside of the MDF.
Cut the 7 1/2 inch boards to the above length.
Step 5: Bottom

Measure the window sill from MDF to MDF on the respective side pieces.
Take the 2 1/2 board and cut to size.
Step 6: Bottom Trim

Measure for the bottom edge. Measure at the top and add x2 thickness.
For example, the thickness of my molding was 7/16 inch, so I added 7/8 inch to the width at the top and cut the edge to size.
Cut two trim pieces to a length of 3/4 inch (the thickness of the MDF).
Step 7: Top Trim

Do the same for the top edge.
The only difference is making 45° cuts on the edge. Nail into place.
If the nail sticks out as shown in image 3, try not to let that happen.
Step 8: Fill and Caulk

Fill nail holes and seal joints.
Sand lightly.
Step 9: Tape

Using painters tape, cover the wall where you do not want to paint.
Step 10: Paint and that's it

How you paint is up to you. Choose a good color that goes well with the rest of your home. My sister is a fan of the adorable white accents shown here.
Some thoughts about painting. Using brushes can leave brush marks, but rollers tend to "shed" paint. Use the method you choose and enjoy.
