LED Fairy Lights Chandelier, This elegant chandelier is made with low power LED fairy lights, some glass ornaments and some cherry wood. If you've never made a light before, but are interested, then this project might be perfect: it involves some basic soldering, simple carpentry work, and we're working on low power, this entire thing is powered by a 5-volt cell. phone charger.

Step 1: How much power?

I picked up a 6 pack of fairy light sets that came with a battery pack containing two 3 volt lithium ion batteries. So I needed to figure out how much power the lights needed to work. Six volts, if powered in series? Or 3 volts if powered in parallel?
After checking with my power supply I confirmed that they needed 3 volts. Now I wanted to use a 5 volt cell phone charger.
To reduce the power, I am installing a pwm regulator made for DC motors. This turned out to be perfect, because with 5 volts going in, I had 3 volts going out.

- Fairy lights
- Glass ornaments
- 30ga cable
- Lighting dimmer
- Bluetooth light switch
Step 2: Bulb Cap

I'm using 100mm glass bulbs and needed to cover the top somehow so I could funnel the wire through a small opening.
I decided to use a cherry dowel, first cutting a 5/8 inch hole a little downward so the top of the bulb could fit into it.
Then cut it and then make a smaller hole all the way to the bottom.
Step 3: Glue the covers on top

To ensure these little caps would fit well on the bulbs, I went with epoxy, which honestly, in my experience, can't be beat when it comes to gluing.
Before gluing them together, I sanded each cap a little to make it nice and smooth, and then used a small amount of epoxy on each cap to glue it in place.
As for the look, I think the wood actually dresses up the bulbs a bit and moves them away from Christmas ornament territory into mid-century modern looking territory.
Step 4: Cherry Discs

Since using cherry dowels, I thought I could continue with that look, so I'm cutting and gluing some cherry boards to create larger panels, which will be the ones that connect to the ceiling.
I'm making two albums, one big and one smaller that will surpass the bigger one. The large one was about 15 inches in diameter and the small one was about 10.
Step 5: Separation of the pins

I'm going to separate the two disks with a couple of pegs. And the reason for this design, is that the wires from the bulbs will be channeled through the larger disc, and I didn't want to mount that directly to the ceiling, so I thought I would add that second piece, create a little bit of space in the middle, plus, it would look like the big disc is almost floating.
Cut spacious holes through the pins, because I will be screwing them together to connect the two discs, and I don't want them to break.
Also cutting holes in the large disk for the wires coming out, and since I have 5 bulbs hanging, 360 divided by 5 is 72 degrees, so that's how far apart they were spaced.
Step 6: Cables

Now obviously each bulb will need two wires, one positive and one negative, but to make it a little neater, I'm twisting two wires along with the drill.
And connected to the drill, I have a piece of aluminum rod that I drilled a hole in, and then just tying the wires together, and that works great to make it spin.
To clean up the wires a little, I'm using some spray paint. For the wires connected to the light bulbs, I spray them with spray paint, and as the longest one goes down the wall, I spray it with white paint.
And you will have to do this a couple of times, rotating the cable to get good coverage.
Step 7: Finishing

For the finish for all the cherry, I'm using some basic stripped shellac, on the light bulb covers and the pieces for the ceiling fixture.
Step 8: Connecting the Cables

Then time to connect all the cables together. I am soldering the five negatives and the five positives, and connecting them with the wires that will connect to the switch and the power plug.
Now, this wire I'm using is 30 gauge, and very thin and fine to work with, and I really wanted something thin, because I think it looks good with the bulbs hanging off the thin wire, plus there's very little power through these wires, so it's okay to use such thin wires.
Step 9: Switch

I needed something to house the pwm switch, which will turn the lights on and also dim them. So I made a simple little wooden box here that also contains the switch, a female barrel socket to which the power cord will be connected.
Then there arealso the cables that come out from the other side, which will be connected to the lights.
Most cell phone chargers do not come with a barrel plug, I am using an old power supply. If you were using a power supply with a micro usb connection, you could simply add that instead of a barrel plug.
Step 10: The length of the cables

Next I'm routing the wires through the holes and cutting them lengthwise, and I wanted all the bulbs to be slightly different heights, so I just tried what might fit. And then once all the wires were finished, I could connect each one with the fairy light strip.
So, the process there is to first confirm which wire of the fairy light strip is positive and which is negative, and then connect them accordingly.
Step 11: Assembling the Discs

To mount the discs, I have screws that go through the small round, then through the pins and then screw them into the large disc.
I also drilled a hole in the center of both discs, which I'm lining them up with, and that's the screw that will actually connect this entire fixture to the ceiling.
Then I connect the dimmer switch box to the lights wire and finally place each fairy light strip into each bulb, and I'm just adding a little hot glue to the end of the plug, to keep the lights in.
