Make Your Own Minimalist Smartphone Holder, this is a smartphone holder project made as a Christmas gift for a couple of family members. There were plenty of docking stations you could buy online, but after some research, we decided you can make your own at a fraction of the cost.
Step 1: Supplies and Schemes

Tools:
- Miter saw/band saw/table saw
- Drill
- Rule
Materials:
- Wood (Common 1″x10″ plywood)
- Key hook
- Wood painting
- Wood finish
- Sandpaper (100, 150 and 220 grit)
- Glue
- Paint brush
- Clamp
- Tape measure
The various cuts needed to make the charging station are shown in the image for this step. You may want to customize these dimensions to your needs, depending on the type of docking station you want.
Step 2: Measure and cut the pieces

Measure and cut the top and bottom pieces of the docking station.
- I got a 1 in. piece of wood. x 10 in. X 6 feet to use as lumber. That width was decided on (9.25″ actual width), so you just need to cut the pieces to the required length.
- Use the miter saw for this cut.
Step 3: Measure and complete the finest cuts

Mark the thinnest cuts on the two pieces, then complete the thinnest cuts
Note: In this part I missed two cuts (the small cuts in the bottom strip of the top piece, and the back of the bottom piece that allows the charger cable to slide under the docking station), and I made them after sanding (which you can see in step 4).
Step 4: Sand Pieces

Sand the edges lightly to round them, and the flat parts to try to smooth them more evenly. Use 100, 150 and 220 sandpaper for the process.
Step 5: One piece broke! Now what?!

Oh no, a piece broke! What should I do? Paste it again!
- Because some of the cuts leave the wood quite thin before the two pieces are joined, some pieces may break or crack along weak points. This is an easy solution. Use an expanded glue to join the two pieces together.
- They can be put back together by applying glue, taping the front and back (to help prevent leaks from expansion), and then clamping the two pieces together.
- Once the glue has expanded, you can use a knife to cut off the extra glue and then sand it smooth.
Step 6: Apply Wood Stain

Wood paint. Depending on the brand you are using, I would recommend applying 3 coats of stain.
If you're in a time crunch, you can really speed up this process by gluing the boards together first (next step), so you can stain both sides at the same time. I did the staining first because the glue can prevent the stain from penetrating the wood, but because the stains that stick are well hidden, this didn't end up being a problem on this project.
Step 7: Join and glue the pieces

Now join two pieces with glue
- You don't have to glue the two pieces together, but I recommend it because it will help reinforce the thin cuts on the bottom of the docking station, and make them much less susceptible to breakage.
- If you are using the expanding glue (like me), only a small amount is necessary, as long as it is a reasonably tight fit.
Step 8: Apply Wood Finish

Apply the wood finish. I applied 3 coats on the top sides and 2 coats on the bottom part (not visible).
Be careful with dripping here, as the stain could freeze in certain spots.
Step 9: Add Hooks

Insert the hooks by measuring and marking where you want to drill (I place my two hooks about 2cm from the top and bottom edges), drill a pilot hole (use a 1/16″ drill bit) and then hand screw the hooks
Be sure to drill perpendicular to the surface, so the hooks go in that way
The hooks seemed pretty secure on their own, but if you wanted to make sure they would stay, you can apply a touch of glue when you screw them in.
Step 10: And it's done!

Here are some photos of the final product.
