Making a Wall Clock with a Natural Edge! 2026

Making a Wall Clock with Natural Edge, in this project I show how I made an alder and walnut clock. Something special about this watch is the back grain pattern.

Step 1: The Design

My plan was to use two alder slaps that I got when I did my chainsaw license/certification. To make it more interesting, I wanted to reverse the growth rings by cutting the two pieces into triangles and gluing them inside out.

Step 2: Remove Chainsaw Marks

I had to remove the chainsaw marks and after some problems on the lathe, I finally got rid of them with my woodworking plane.

Step 3: Arrangement of the pieces

I used my compass to draw a more or less complex pattern on the slaps to create the larger pieces of inside-out triangles.

The pointed angle must be 30° so that 12 of them create a circle. One piece for every hour.

Step 4: Cut and glue the pieces

Unfortunately, there was a lot of waste after cutting all the pieces on the band saw, but maybe I can use it in a future project.

For contrast I also used a piece of walnut and glued everything in an alternating pattern together. I cut off the bark that I cut earlier and glued it to the clock.

Step 5: Finishing and placement of the mechanics

In the end I finished everything with boiled linseed oil and finally connected the clock mechanics.
