Nightstand Made from Reclaimed Wood, this beautiful nightstand was made from an old bathroom cabinet, found in very dilapidated circumstances.
With a little cleaning, repair, painting and the addition of fronts from other recycling drawers, a laminated wood top and four wooden pallet legs, I ended up with a beautiful bedside companion for less money than a new, uniquely designed one costs.

The base cabinet for this project was quite cheap: laminated with a chipboard core and then glued. It had suffered damage in its short life, suffering some dents, dings and holes, especially on the back.
So whatever has happened to your particular cabinet, the first step is to renew it.
First, clean it well with a disinfectant cleaner. There were all kinds of nasty things in these drawers: hair, dental floss, etc. Take off the drawer fronts, usually attached with screws at the back, and discard them. Screw where necessary to tighten the case. If really necessary, reattach a new one, I used a piece of masonite, with glue and screws. Add plywood stretchers to the top if it's not already in place, cutting them to fit snugly.
Fill all nail and screw holes with putty, sand and paint everything with the color of your choice.
Step 2: Upper

To make the top, I used some old pine scraps.
Cut clean edges on your boards with the table saw. Apply glue liberally and tighten. Once the excess glue has reached a consistency, scrape it off with a putty knife. Sand close and smooth. Cut the end grain edges flush and clean them with a circular saw, chop saw, or table saw with a miter gauge.
Step 3: Drawers

If your cabinet has drawers, take them out. If you have a door, take it off the hinges. Hit a center line on the front face
Set a stop on your chop saw: a clamp or block of wood that you can attach a block of material to, allowing you to cut many pieces of the same length. Cut a stack of assorted pieces the same width as the overall closet box.
Hold all your pieces together, then punch a center line along their top edges. Align the center line on the scrap with the center line on the front of the drawer, glue and set in place. If you don't have a nail or gun, you can screw it from the back.
Use a nice contrasting piece of wood for a handle, or recycle your original cabinet pulls.
Step 4: Paws!

The legs here are made with a simple bandsaw hack that allows for angled cuts on all sides. Of course, lacking a band saw, straight legs, recycled steel couch legs, or small pieces from the hardware store would work great. However, the legs are essential, as they keep it from looking less like a cabinet just placed on the floor and more like a piece of furniture.
Many pallets are made of hardwood, due to the weight they have to support. Once you have an unnailed piece, run it through a planer and saw to square it up as best you can. Cut four 4″ blanks. Then, with a band saw, cut two angles on the same face, per image 6. You can stop there, or... use masking tape or painter's tape to put the cut pieces back together. Rotate it 90 degrees, write identical angles on it and cut them. In the end, you will have a radically angled leg that tapers in all four directions.
Step 5: Assembly

It's time to put everything in order. Measure from the four corners of the bottom of the cabinet so that its legs fit perfectly on all sides, then pre-drill (always pre-drill!) and drive a 3″-4″ screw into the legs through the bottom of the cabinet, along with some glue. Gravity will also conspire to keep them in place quite well.
Do the same with the top. Replace the drawers
Finish the legs, tops and drawer fronts with your polyurethane/paint/oil/varnish/etc. Favorites.
Fill it with all your secret bedside stuff and have fun!
