Retro Stand Made from Recycled Wood for Smartphones, there are cheap plastic stands or expensive Etsy products that are basically too sturdy to hold the base of a phone. I don't like any of the options.
If you have a table saw, glue, clamps, sander/sandpaper, and reclaimed wood, you can make this little charging station. Almost all the wood found around the workshop will do the job: I used leftover pine from a dismantled sofa and some wood from pallets.
Step 1: Cut the boards

Cut four lengths of the board to about 6.75 cm wide. This should be a little wider than the width of your phone (mine is an iPhone 5) but you can adjust it for different phone styles and shapes.
The boards are cut to a length approximately 5cm longer than the length of the phone.
I just worked using my phone as a template and essentially analyzed all my measurements. When the proportions looked good, I stopped cutting.
Step 2: Glue

Glue the four boards together on their widest faces using wood glue and clamps. Be careful to keep everything aligned as misalignments mean more sanding/planing later.
The glue acts as a lubricant before it dries, making it very easy for the boards to move out of alignment if you're not careful. You should note that the boards were approximately 18mm thick, resulting in a final thickness of over 7cm.
My boards were slightly different shades/colors, so I alternated them to get a look I liked.
Step 3: Clean and sand

Scrape off excess glue with a chisel and sand lightly; Use a hand planer or similar if necessary to remove any high spots. Then sand to get a nice, smooth finish - I used a mouse sander, but a ROS would be good too.
Step 4: Make the cornice

Cut a narrow strip of wood approximately 8mm x 8mm and glue to the front side of the base.
This creates a narrow ridge or edge that will keep your phone along a horizontal edge when charging. If your phone is thicker you will need to adjust the width of the strip accordingly.
Step 5: Trim the charger cable

I used a contrast piece of wood about an inch wide to cut a small but deeply larger die/channel than the business end of the iPhone charger and also a cut to go through the shelf portion (using a table saw).
Once this is done, stick it on the left or right end of the holder (i.e. you can choose to make a right or left hand version).
I went with the right hand. Make sure the charger has enough room to move relatively easily
Step 6: Legs

Set a 5-degree angled cut using a protractor/miter gauge on the table saw to remove two small angled shims from more wood.
Glue these to the base of the clock as legs. This causes the stand to tilt upwards slightly, which helps keep the phone in place when it is on the stand being charged.
Step 7: Finished<

PuYou can paint or seal the support, but I haven't done that yet. To complete the retro look, you can download any number of clock apps that mimic the functions and/or look of an old-school clock radio. Thanks for watching, if you like this or create a version, post your creation in the comments. Greetings!
