Rustic Looking Stackable Coasters Made from a Fallen Tree, when stacked together they look like a tree branch. Simple, neat and fun!
Instead of burning down that old tree in the backyard, repurpose it and turn it into something amazing! These stackable coasters line up on a shaft connected to the bottom coaster and are a great way to protect your table. Making your own is super easy, and a great way to give an old tree new life.
Ready? Here we go!
Step 1: Tree Branches

There was an oak tree in my neighborhood that had some dead branches.
The branches of the trees had been dead for a long time, so the wood was already dry. You will need wood with a moisture content of about 10% or less to prevent splitting of the wood after working with it (ideally 6-8%). You can check the moisture content of wood using a moisture meter. If you have 'greener' wood, this is a good tool for drying wood at home.
Using a hand saw, I cut the oak branches into a manageable length. To make these rustic coasters we will need a tree branch that has a larger diameter than the beer bottle, that way it can accommodate all types of drink containers.
Step 2: Measurement

I wanted thick coasters so that when stacked they look like one big section of wood. I measured approximately 1 ½".
Step 3: Cut

Installing a stop block on the chop saw that matched the thickness of the coasters, I carefully cut the branch into 1 ½" disks.
Step 4: Drilling

To align the coasters when they are stacked, a corresponding reference hole is drilled in each piece that will have a pin. The bottom will have an opening drilled only halfway, which will house the peg to align all the coasters stacked on top.
I used a forsner bit that was a little larger than the ½” diameter dowel I was using so the coasters could slide in easily. After drilling the first hole in the top disc, stack and align the next piece and carefully mark the opening. This will allow your piece to line up perfectly when stacked.
I used a matching ½” forging bit, and only drilled halfway, so the pin would fit properly. Drill carefully and not too close to the edge so that the wooden discs do not break.
Step 5: Glue

After drilling, the dowel can be glued. This will be the axis on which the other coasters will be stacked.
Step 6: Stack the coasters

After the glue has dried on the bottom dowel, stack the remaining discs in order on top. We will have to trim the furring at the top.
Step 7: Cut flush

Using a flush saw, I carefully cut the pin to match the top assembly.
If you wish, you can sand the surface of the coasters. My coasters were in good shape from the chop saw and did not require any additional sanding.
Step 8: Ready!

I coated each piece with Danish oil, which really brought out the grain and helped seal the wood against the moisture they would inevitably come into contact with. I applied 2 coats of oil, allowing approximately 30 minutes between coats, excess oil wiped off.
Step 9: Stack and serve

Stacked together, these coasters look like a tree branch, lift one up and it's ready to serve any container. Whether stacked or separated, these handy attractive coasters would be a great addition to your cabin/rustic home or perhaps alone in your urban hideaway.
