Solid Wood Platform Bed, it turned out to be an easy project, only a little more difficult due to the weight of the wood I chose to use, which resulted in a bed that weighed approximately 275 pounds and that I had to build in such a way that it can be easily disassembled for transport. Try to make it as light as possible.

Step 1: Materials: Mark and cut

I purchased a slab of Eastern Maple already cut into 4 boards from a local yard that specializes in slab lumber. I wanted the bed to be king size with a platform sticking out about 6″ on each side of the bed. I initially wanted the foot of the bed to stick out 12″. Unfortunately, the destination room is too shallow for this, but it would have been a nice touch to have been able to use the foot of the bed as a shelf for books or decorative items. I had two boards of Port Orford cedar left over from another project that I would use for the legs.

After cutting the 4 planks to length, I marked and cut the simple joints. The wood was too heavy to risk using a slotted blade on my table saw, so I cut and chiseled the rakes with a circular saw. Next time I'll have to come up with a faster and more precise technique for this step.

Step 2: Design and fit

I then extended the main bed frame and sanded/chiseled the joints to get an acceptable fit. I wasn't looking for perfection here, and I didn't get it either! I wanted the joints to stand out, and to achieve this, I think next time I'll use a screen on all the edges of the joints to exaggerate them while hiding any imperfections. After placing it I cut a 1/2″ hole in the two long sides of the frame to accept the slats

Step 3: Assemble

I then assembled the bed frame into place using appropriately sized carriage bolts through the slot joints as I needed to be able to disassemble this frame to move it. I counterfeited the bolts with a drill bit in my drill. With the frame assembled, I slid the boards I was using for the legs under the frame. In fact, it took a couple of jacks to lift the frame, it was so heavy! With the legs in place, it was easy to secure them with Screws in recessed holes just like carriage bolts.

All equipment on the end of the bed frame is visible. I like the idea of the basics of structural elements shown, so this was fine for me, but if this were a client, they would probably offer to hide them with wooden plugs.

All that was left to do was add the slats that will support the mattress. I had previously cut a shelf for them to sit on before assembling the frame. I used raw cedar pickets which, in addition to being cheap, are nice and springy and add a wonderful cedar smell to the bedding (at least for the first few months). Finally I sealed the frame (but not the slats) with a clear, flat sealant.

The frame is so heavy that I installed hard plastic sliding slides under the legs, since it was impossible to move it otherwise. After a couple of months I noticed the cedar slats were starting to sink in the middle of the bed (a concern I had been keeping an eye on) and refitted a 2X4 leventually in the center of the framework that solved the problem.
