Sturdy Wooden Front Porch Swing, When I first saw my house, I fell in love with the front porch that runs the entire length of the front.
It's huge (about 8'x35') and the perfect spot for a porch swing.
So, I did some research on the Internet and found several designs that had elements I liked. I made a shopping list and a trip to the hardware store later...
Step 1: Getting Started

This was probably the most difficult part of the project. The basic criteria for the swing is that it should sit at least 3 medium to large sized adults and should not feel flimsy.
Although I had a general design in place, some details (like the angle between the back and the seat) were still to be determined and, not wanting to waste the not-so-cheap wood I bought, I did a lot of measuring and note-taking.
I wasn't as concerned about specific dimensions as I was about finding something comfortable, so I looked for various benches and seats.
In the end the small bench you see in this photo contributed to the angle of the back of the seat, the width came from another chair I found and was based on the length of my own legs (which also determined its final hanging height which was noted by some of my smaller friends and family who feel a little small)
Step 2: Back Support

These pieces require the most complicated cutting of the entire project.
Where each back support was attached to the seat, I decided to create half-lap joints at the angle I wanted for the back and seat. These were then glued and screwed together, forming a fairly strong joint.
The pieces that would make up the seat also had slots cut into them where the main structural pieces that it would be hung from would slide.
Step 3: Colombian oscillation skeleton
Here you have the skeleton of the swing mostly in place. I cut the pieces that ran longitudinally on the seat with a stilt (they would eventually hang down) and placed them in place with the back/seat pieces vertically. I pre-drilled some holes and put each of those points together for added rigidity. Then it was just a matter of adding the top and front pieces and screwing everything into place. Step 4: Installing the platform Before I began permanently attaching the slats, I tested their fit and the armrests. When I was happy with the arrangement, I started attaching them. This part seemed to take a while since I was drilling each hole. I used a convenient spacer to keep all the slats evenly distributed. Step 5: Armrests After all that effort, I decided to drag the (surprisingly heavy) swing to the porch stairs so I could sit there. I am very happy with the result. Very comfortable and felt solid. The armrests were simple, but functional. I wasn't 100% thrilled with them, but they work and I haven't found a better option. However, if I ever do, they are held in place by bolts, so they are easily replaceable. Step 6: Staining This was, without a doubt, my least favorite part of the entire process. It might have worked better to do the staining before assembly, but I made a lot of small adjustments during the batten installation and ran a router with a round tip over all the outside edges once assembled. I didn't think multiple staining would look good (or at least I didn't trust my ability to dye it multiple times and achieve the same color every time). Despite doing it wrong, I was happy with the final result. I also hit it with several coats of spray over varnish, which was much easier to handle. Step 7: The Finished Product, Installation Notes And here you have the porch swing in all its glory. The chain arrangement was taken from my research and appears to work very well at maintaining vertical oscillation while providing maximum support for the seat area. I'm happy with it, although it was a little more complicated to hang the swing to begin with. I also used 4 porch swing brackets. They are normally sold in pairs so you can use 2 as a swing, but I thought this worked better. They are rated for 250+ lbs per bracket and attach to the porch ceiling joists so they don't go anywhere. My estimate is that the swing can probably safely support around 700-800 lbs. I have loaded it to 600 pounds without any problems and it is actually strong enough to handle 2-3 people of any normal size. At this point, it's also been in use and for some time, so I'm pretty confident in its sturdiness. I added some additional supports to the bottom. If you look closely you can see the angled keys running along the bottom of the main supports. Strictly speaking they're not absolutely necessary, but after spending all that time building the thing, I decided to err on the side of safety, so I added them before installing it. Step 8: In action Proof that the porch swing really can hold people up. Greetings!
