The Yemen conflict has forced thousands of children to abandon school for work as fighting upends daily life. In the mornings, 13-year-old Muneer Farie used to attend school, and in the afternoons he helped his father feed the livestock. He dreamed of becoming the first teacher in his family of farmers. But as fighting approached his village in al-Wazeyah district in Taiz, Yemen, two weeks ago, Muneer's focus drifted from his lessons. The classroom echoed with distant explosions and gunfire. His home suddenly became the frontline of renewed fighting between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.

"We heard there was fighting in surrounding areas but we didn't expect it would reach our village that fast," Muneer said. "As soon as the sounds of clashes approached our village, we took our livestock and important belongings and fled home early in the morning." He and his family fled south-west to a camp for displaced people in al-Shimayateen, Taiz. They arrived penniless and lacking even the most basic supplies. Muneer and his family are among the more than 130,000 people displaced by recent fighting in Yemen, which started in September when the Houthis launched a renewed military campaign and rapidly moved south-west, seizing control of towns along the Red Sea coast.

Impact of the Yemen Conflict on Children's Education

The Houthis' campaign interrupted years of relative calm that had prevailed over Yemen, with frontlines remaining broadly static since a UN-mediated ceasefire in 2022. Now, the resurgence of violence has shattered any sense of normalcy. For children like Muneer, education has become a distant dream. Instead of attending classes, many are forced into labor to help their families survive. The conflict has not only displaced families but also destroyed schools and disrupted education across the region.

According to UNICEF, over 2 million children in Yemen are out of school, and the recent escalation is expected to push that number higher. The loss of education has long-term consequences, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting future opportunities. Children who leave school to work often face dangerous conditions, low pay, and little hope for a better future.

Key Challenges Faced by Displaced Families

  • Loss of livelihood: Families fleeing conflict lose their homes, farms, and sources of income.
  • Lack of access to education: Displacement camps often lack schools, and children must work to contribute to family survival.
  • Psychological trauma: Exposure to violence and displacement leaves deep emotional scars.
  • Food insecurity: Many families struggle to find enough food, leading to malnutrition among children.

Data on Child Labor and Displacement in Yemen

Indicator Pre-Conflict (2014) Current (2025)
Children out of school 1.6 million 2.7 million
Internally displaced persons 300,000 4.5 million
Child labor cases 23% 34%
Schools damaged or destroyed ~1,000 ~2,500

These figures highlight the devastating impact of the conflict on Yemen's youngest generation. The international community has called for increased humanitarian aid and efforts to protect children's rights, but access to affected areas remains challenging.

What Can Be Done to Help Yemen's Children?

Addressing the crisis requires a multifaceted approach. Immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, and medical care, is critical. But long-term solutions must focus on rebuilding education infrastructure and providing psychosocial support. Organizations like UNICEF and Save the Children are working on the ground to establish temporary learning spaces and provide educational materials. However, funding gaps and ongoing violence hinder these efforts.

Advocacy for a peaceful resolution to the conflict is also essential. Without a lasting ceasefire, any gains in education will remain fragile. The international community must pressure all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians, especially children.
