Nia Archives delivers a brilliant blend of breakbeats and heartbreak on her second full-length album, Emotional Junglist, cementing her status as a unique British talent. This record, like Olivia Rodrigo's recent hit, chronicles the dizzying highs of new love and the crushing lows of sudden heartbreak, but Archives does it with a distinctly jungle-infused sound that sets her apart.
The Emotional Journey of Emotional Junglist
The album is structured in two distinct halves. The first captures the protagonist falling in love at breakneck speed, with upbeat, syncopated rhythms and euphoric melodies. The second half pivots to the whiplash of heartbreak, where melancholic strings and raw vocals take center stage. Archives' ability to weave these emotions into her music is what makes this album so compelling.

Nia Archives' Unique Path to Stardom
Unlike many mainstream artists, Archives didn't have a predestined route to success. Growing up in Bradford, she was influenced by early 00s pirate radio, dancehall, and landfill indie. At just 16, she left home for a youth hostel in Manchester, teaching herself to make beats. She later moved to Hackney to study music production, using her student loan to fund her debut single. This grassroots journey is reflected in the authenticity of Emotional Junglist.
Archives has made history as the first electronic/dance act to win a Mobo in decades, after campaigning for dance music inclusion in 2022. Her debut album Silence Is Loud earned her three Brit nominations and a Mercury prize nod—the first for a junglist since 1997, before she was born.
Musical Evolution and Comparisons
Emotional Junglist feels like the big sister to Silence Is Loud, with a stronger sense of self and a more sophisticated record collection. The melodies, airlifted from indie-pop and R&B and re-situated within chaotic breakbeats, are stickier and more evolved. This is also Archives' first album with a full live band, adding heft to every bass throb, cymbal crash, and tearful swell of strings.
