Ricky Gervais Alley Cats Review: Boorish Comedy Fails to Land 2026

Ricky Gervais's new animated comedy Alley Cats on Netflix is a boorish, sweary affair that fails to elicit a single laugh, as our review details. The show, which premieres Friday, August 7, features a gang of stray cats led by Gus, a fat ginger tom voiced by Gervais, who spout pub-bore banter from a derelict house. Despite Gervais's past comedic genius, this series feels dated and uninspired, leaving even former fans cold.

What Is Alley Cats About?

Alley Cats follows a group of feral felines who spend their days lounging on a sofa, watching TV, and engaging in crude, politically incorrect dialogue. The premise aims for edgy satire but lands as a series of tired tropes about cancel culture and 'wokeness.' Gervais voices Gus, the alpha cat, whose rants about dwarves, disabled people, and trans individuals are meant to provoke but instead feel lazy.

The Comedy's Missed Opportunities

Great transgressive comedy walks a tightrope, balancing shock with wit. Alley Cats leans heavily on shock without the cleverness to back it up. For instance, a scene where Gus mocks a disabled bird lacks any subversion—it's just mean-spirited. The show's humor relies on the audience's discomfort, but without a clever punchline, it becomes cringe-worthy.

Comparatively, Gervais's earlier work like The Office used awkwardness to reveal human truths. Here, the characters are one-dimensional, and the dialogue feels like a parody of his stand-up rants. The result is a series that neither entertains nor enlightens, leaving viewers wondering what happened to the comedian who once made us cringe with recognition.

Critical Reception vs. Fan Response

Early reviews are mixed, with many critics echoing our sentiment that Alley Cats falls flat. Some diehard fans, however, defend it as 'brave' and 'anti-woke.' This divide highlights a broader cultural debate about comedy's role in a changing society. Let's compare the perspectives:

As our queer friend noted, 'He’s defunct. We don’t need him any more.' That sentiment captures the show's irrelevance. While Gervais's politics have always been contrarian, his comedy used to be clever. Now, it feels like a caricature of itself.

Why Alley Cats Misses the Mark

The core issue is that Alley Cats mistakes offensiveness for edginess. Great comedians like George Carlin or Louis CK (before his fall) used taboo topics to question authority, not to reinforce stereotypes. Gervais's jokes about marginalized groups don't punch up; they punch down, which is why they fail to resonate with modern audiences.

Moreover, the animation is stiff, and the voice acting lacks energy. Gervais's delivery, once sharp, now sounds like he's reading lines without enthusiasm. The supporting cast, including voices from his previous projects, adds little. The show's structure—episodes of cats talking on a sofa—becomes monotonous quickly.

Key Takeaways

• Alley Cats is a weak addition to Netflix's comedy lineup, with a 0% laugh rate in our review.
• The show's reliance on 'anti-woke' humor feels dated and lacks the cleverness of Gervais's earlier work.
• Despite mixed fan support, critics agree that the series is a creative low point for Gervais.
• If you're a fan of transgressive comedy, look elsewhere—this is not the sharp satire you're seeking.

Is Alley Cats Worth Your Time?

For casual viewers, Alley Cats is easily skippable. For Gervais completists, it may be a curiosity, but it's unlikely to satisfy. The show's humor is so forced that even the most open-minded comedy fan will struggle to find a chuckle. It's a cautionary tale about resting on your laurels and mistaking controversy for creativity.
