2 Simple and Practical Projects You Can Make with PVC Pipes, since I have three small children (and I hope to have more) I was forced to grant the request. (Also, I really don't like the smell of cat pee...especially on my clothes.)
PVC Clothing Sorter
Anyway, this is a 5-tray PVC clothing sorter that is made with PVC pipe, fittings, snap clamps, a piece of fabric, some laundry bags, and of course some safety pins.
Note: I am a partner in a business that distributes these PVC accessories (so no one is surprised).
Here is a video where my family talks about that cat... It's funny:
Step 1: Plan

Step 2: Materials

I am assembling this clothing sorter with PVC parts. Here's a summary of what I used and where I got them from.
Note:
All tubes are 1/2″ size. PVC Structural Fittings: These fittings are made especially for construction (they do not carry fluid), although you could also use standard PVC fittings.
- 8 Three Way L Pipes – PVC20 – Three Way L (These will be for the corners)
- 5 T-connections – PVC25 (These will be for the middle supports and for the top of the lid).
- 11 Small Sided T-Connections – PVC10 (These hold the “bag supports” and are also used for the lid).
- 2 Elbows – PVC15 (These are the corners of the cover).
- 5 Laundry Bags
- 1 Piece of fabric to cover the top
- Safe pins to help bind the fabric.
Quick clamps:
Snap clamps are PVC clips used to fasten lid fabric and laundry bags.
- 12 – For the bag supports
- 12 – To hold the cover fabric
PVC pipe lengths:
I keep the lengths simple. I made it three feet tall and 6 feet wide, so I only had two lengths to cut.
- 16 3-foot cuts (4 for bottom, 4 for top, 6 for uprights, 2 for top)
- 11 18″ Cuts (2 for the bottom, 6 for the top, 3 for the lid)
You will probably want to determine the size based on the size bags you plan to use.
Step 3: Assemble the frame

I started by assembling the base. I added the studs and then built the top frame. Notice how I put the PVC tee fittings on the pipe. I used 3 on one and 4 on the other, the extra on one side was a support for the middle of the lid.
The only really difficult part was the length of the lid piping. Because the hinges are offset, I had to trim one of the top pipes to fit the offset.
Once I got to that part in the project I simply measured it into place and trimmed off the excess with a saw. I did not glue any PVC pipe.
Step 4: Join the bags and the lid with the fabric

I fastened my bags with some plastic clipselastic These clips are great because they allow you to easily cut fabric on a PVC pipe. The bags can be removed and washed when they become smelly or need to be changed.
We used a fabric over the top, pulled tight, secured with clamps and then with some safety pins (so the excess fabric wouldn't flap).
Step 5: PVC Laundry Basket Completed!
