A Paradise of Play That Won't Turn You Into a Donkey 2026

You might remember the fable of Pinocchio and the episode where the protagonist follows Candlewick, his lazier and more mischievous schoolmate and best friend, to go with him to the Land of Toys, climbing with other boys onto a cart pulled by twelve pairs of donkeys and driven by the Little Man of Butter.

There, “...amid continuous amusements and varied diversions, the hours, days, and weeks passed like so many flashes of lightning...” The only drawback is that, after five months, Pinocchio wakes up one morning with an ugly surprise: he has turned into a donkey. The land where Pinocchio found himself is often mentioned, but without a negative connotation; it is only used to describe a place where each of us finds everything we could wish for. And last weekend, taking a trip to Bricoman in Genoa, I thought for the umpteenth time, “...but this is the Land of Toys...”

I am passionate about doing, about knowing how things are done, about learning all the products and materials to make objects, to improve the home from a structural, systems, comfort, and aesthetic point of view. Today, researching all the innovations in products is easy thanks to the internet; however, when you start planning something, difficulties arise when you need to source everything required. For example, if you want to renovate a bathroom with painting, changing the switch plates or outlets (today there are smart ones that can be controlled with your cell phone!), replacing the door, the faucet, tiling or waterproofing the shower walls, replacing the shower enclosure, etc., you have to go to multiple stores, with the risk that the material is not available and you have to wait to get it. At Bricoman, there really is the unimaginable, with so much choice and prices for every budget; everything is on display and ready for delivery. An endless array of semi-finished ironwork and pre-assembled gates, sliding mirror doors complete with tracks and hardware, ready to assemble, sanitary ware of every type, coverings from mosaics to large slabs with adhesives, grouts, and everything needed for installation, every type of fitting and pipe for plumbing, everything needed to do an electrical system, not to mention the equipment.

On the pages of this magazine, we have never supported consumerism; after all, not in the sense of buying for the sake of buying. But when you have a project in mind and you want to carry it out yourself or with the help of a professional, having a place where you can find everything you need under one roof is a huge advantage. It saves time, reduces stress, and often lets you avoid costly mistakes. So, consider this your own personal Land of Toys—one that won't turn you into a donkey, but into a capable DIYer.
