Carving and Construction of an Oak Desk. A desk with a cabinet, a couple of drawers, one of which would be deep enough for filing documents, additional drawers for pencils/drawing equipment ect. On the top and a rear panel you can mount a monitor stand.
Materials:
- American white oak
- Maple for the sides and back of the drawer
- Plywood for drawer bottoms
- Wooden dowels
- M6 and M10 insert nuts
- Split bolts for connector
- Threaded rod
- Wood glue
- Danish oil
Tools:
- Table, miter, circular, jig and hand saws
- Drill + bits
- Wood Joiner
- Wood Router
- Screwdrivers, wrenches
- Clamps
- Angle grinder with Kutzall and Dremel carving disc
- Sander
- Tape measure, angle gauges
- Safety glasses
- Dust mask
Step 1: Desk and Main Legs:
We started with the top of the desk... Using the table and miter saw, 4 boards were cut to the required width and length. The length was made long enough for the actual top and the 2 side pieces that slope down. The edges of the planks were planned to ensure that they fit together without any gaps. The joints were cut and the boards were glued and fastened together.
The next day, the desk top can be cut to size with 45° ends. The two inclined pieces needed to be 20° and 30°, to vertical. This required them to pass through the table saw in an upright position, thus making a simple jig that could slide along the table saw fence and allow the workpiece to be clamped to it.
The pieces that fit at an angle were cut. These would provide support for the sides that would be under load from the legs and cabinet, but also something to attach the drawer slides to.
The blanks for the main and long legs were then cut to size with a compound miter cut at the top to allow them to open when fitting. These legs would be bolted across the left slope; They first held and screwed them into position. This allows a 90° guide and 8mm drill bit to be used to drill down through the slope piece and into the leg. The threaded rod with some epoxy resin could be screwed into the leg. Each leg has 2 bars to prevent them from rotating.
With the legs that can be mounted on the desk, they were shaped. A simple taper jig (sacrificial plate with clamps) that allows the legs to be passed through the table saw and reduced from 70mm at the top to 30mm. With a Spokeshave tool a slight curve was worked into the bottom and the edges were rounded. A piece for the transition from the legs to the bottom of the desk was also glued in place and then shaped.
With all the components completed for the desktop subassembly, they were put together.

Step 2: Rear Shelf

While 2 planks were cut and glued to form a panel for the back of the desk. Once dry, the sides were cut at a 45° angle.
The shelf was made of a board. To follow the shape of the back I needed to have miters cut at 45° and 22.5°, these were cut to allow the wood grain to roll, through and under the shelf.
To allow the computer monitor to be mounted on the back panel, the width of the shelf in the center portion was reduced. This was marked and then cut. The entire front edge of the shelf was tapered to two different heights; using a router on the stepped back and the table saw for the sides.
Slots were cut into the back of the shelf to allow cables to pass through to the speakers that will sit on it. The shelf and side pieces were glued together. The shelf is attached to the back panel using insert nuts and connector bolts. The back panel similarly screws onto the top of the desk.
Step 3: Cabinet

What's more, the design for the cabinet is not exactly square... Looking at it from the front, the left side is offset by 10°, the right side by 5° and the entire front tilts forward by 10°. Lots of interesting angles to cut!
First you needed to glue another panel that was long enough to make all the sides of the cabinet, this followed the same process as the panel for the desk; Cut > Assemble > Glue> Clamps. Cut with a circular saw to the required lengths for each of the cabinet sides.
Using an angle gauge, the table saw blade was adjusted to the required angles and all cabinet panels were cut out. Some pieces had to be cut flat and others had to be attached to the sled to pass vertically, depending on whether the angle was more or less than the maximum 45° that the table saw blade can adjust.
The top of the cabinet would be bolted to the right side of the desk top, with spacers to give a shaded space between them. 6 holes were drilled to allow the M10 bolts to be inserted through the small top drawers and screwed into the insert nuts that would remain on the bottom of the desk.
After all the pieces were cut and fitted, it was time to hit the glue. In order to hold the pieces together properly, glue small blocks near the edge of each panel with a notch cut that will allow you to hold them perpendicularly across the angled joint. These can be chiseled after the cabinet has dried. It takes a lot of clamps and added straps for a good result.
After a while, drill holes in the board to add nails for added strength. These were made on the non-visible side.
The small legs were cut, tapered and fitted to the bottom of the cabinet similar to the main legs. With both sets able to be assembled, the legs could now be trimmed to their final length. The desk was raised onto a workbench and leveled. By measuring to the floor and subtracting the amount by which it was raised, a distance was given to calculate what height would be required.
Step 4: Drawers

Finally, the sides are cut to length; and for the draftsmen's closet, also measure and level to keep the shape of the final product.
The scribbles could then be assembled and glued together. After they were dried, I drilled them and added some damn dowel across the front of the side pieces to the front. This adds a bit of strength but is predominantly for aesthetics.
Angle carving was used with the Dremel, to produce the full flow of curves and lines desired.
Step 5: Finishing

Finally, we hope you enjoy it! See you later.
