Basic Aquaponics System

This system uses fish waste as fertilizer. Using a small pump, water from the fish tank is drawn to irrigate the crops through the top of the columns. You do not need any other fertilizer or pesticide with this system.
You will need these materials:
- Pipe
- 15-20 feet of 4-inch diameter PVC or ADS
- 4 pieces of 4 inch elbows
- 4 pieces of 4 inch T connectors
- 2 pieces of 50 gallon drums
- 15-20 ft Pex tubing or aquarium tubing
- Plastic cups
- Strips of fabric (burlap sack, cable ties, or other fastener)
- Waste wood
- 2 rolls of electrical tape
- Sneakers
- 1 unit water pump: the size depends on how much flow you need.
- An aquarium pump is sufficient to maintain the flow
Step 1 instructions:
Cut the pipe at six and a half feet. sections for the sides and two 14-in. end sections. Drill two 3-inch diameter holes in each of the 1-foot side pieces. Drill a 1-inch diameter hole in the side of one of the end pieces.

Step 2 instructions:
It is time to assemble each of the pieces that we have just cut using some type of adhesive or other material to obtain this result.

Step 3 instructions:
Drill 1-inch diameter holes in the vertical pipes, spaced evenly. Place the vertical pipes and drill the bottom of the plastic cups.

Step 4 instructions:
For drainage you can use two 50-gallon drums like these or any other type of container that holds fish water. You can even scale this and place it on top of an indoor aquarium.

Step 5 instructions:
Pierce the entire top of both plastic barrels until you get these results.

Step 6 instructions:
This is the garden structure assembled on top of the drums, seen from two slightly different angles.

Step 7 instructions:
Next, cut and assemble the pipe so that you can pump water from a barrel to each of the four vertical pipes. You can also pump water from the barrel receiving drain to the barrel feeding the system.
