DIY: Pocket Hole Jig, these things have been around forever, and even before Kreg came on the scene for consumers, pocket hole woodworking was alive and well. So why use pocket hole joinery? Well, it's fast.
So, how about I show you how to make this handy template so you can save a few bucks?

Step 1: Planning

I hope you didn't want a difficult project... Yes, I made a nice CAD drawing just for you.
If you need it, follow the link to get a pdf of this plan.
Step 2: Construction
I made my IPE pocket hole jig. Because? Because I had it on hand, it's tough as nails, and did I mention I already had it? Since IPE is so difficult, I didn't bother using a steel sleeve inside the pilot hole. If you wanted to use a steel sleeve, go ahead! Simply make the necessary adjustments and you are ready to go.
Step 3: Use

Oh, you might want to know how to use this! First, you will need a 3/8″ pocket drill. This drill comes with a locking collar, which is used to set the depth of the hole you make. When making a pocket hole, you want the smallest diameter to touch the end of the piece you are drilling.
If you reach the largest diameter of the drill, you will either look for larger screws or throw the piece away because you made a mistake.
So before you start doing it with the wood you are making your project, test your setup and make sure the collar is in the right place so you are drilling to the correct depth. Make this on recycled wood the same thickness as your project material. This hole should be centered on the thickness of the board. So, let's say your board is 1″ thick, the small light section of the drill needs to peek out about 1/2″ from each side.
Then onto the review:
- The drilling section should be centered on the thickness of the part you are drilling
- The closure collar sets the depth of the pocket, if you go too deep you have to start over
- Test on recycled wood
Now that you're all set and ready to go, use the center line of your template to place it where you want your pocket holes and let it rip!
Once all your pocket holes are drilled, you are ready for assembly. I use Kreg brand pocket hole screws because they are cheap enough and easy to find.
