How to Easily Open a Combination Lock 2026

If you have problems with your padlock, in this article we will give you a small tip on how to open a combination lock easily.

This skill is only to be used legally and I am not responsible for anything other than teaching you how to unlock your own combination locks that you may have forgotten the code for.

Step 1: Explaining how everything works

A combination lock (using a bicycle lock as an example as shown in the images above) has three or more dials with a keyhole in the center of them.

When the correct code is entered (in this case 9-2-4), the holes in all the lock dials align and the toothed pin can be inserted (second image). When the dials are moved or mixed, the holes become misaligned and the toothed pin cannot be removed and therefore locks in place.

To break a combination lock, rope can be used to create a makeshift handle to give you a better grip on the lock. A good grip is necessary because to break the lock you will need to apply a strong, uniform upward force on the shackle throughout the procedure and this can be difficult to obtain with just your bare hands.

Being able to apply a strong, even force to the shackle is vital to applying greater friction to the lock dials, so that when the dial is turned to the correct number, there is a resounding 'click' and a slight upward movement of the shackle.

When you feel the shackle move up slightly and release a 'click', you can move to the next dial and repeat the procedure until all dials on the lock have been completed and the lock has been broken. If the lock is locked on a solid object, such as a door or gate, a length of rope will most likely not be necessary, as having it locked on something gives you more control and grip, meaning you will be able to complete the entire procedure with just your bare hands.

Step 2: Assemble your team

In order to crack your combination lock, all you will need is a length of cable or rope about 30cm long and the combination lock you wish to unlock.

Step 3: Find the correct Dial

You will need to pass the rope through the loop on the lock and fold it in half around the shackle as shown in the first photo. This will become your makeshift handle giving you a tighter and tighter grip on the lock to make the procedure easier.

Hold the rope tightly in your hands and push down on the top of the lock with maximum force using your thumb and make sure you continue to exert the same force on the lock throughout the procedure.

While maintaining even pressure on the lock, you should now turn each of the dials slightly in each direction. You will quickly find the dial that is the most difficult to turn, which is the dial you will start with (in my case, it was 'C').

Step 4: Crack the code

Gradually begin turning the dial until you hear a resonant 'click' and feel the shackle move slightly upward. Check the dial and make a note of the number you 'clicked' on, then gradually continue to rotate that same dial to double check (in my case, dialing 'C' was the hardest to turn and it 'clicked' on '7'). If you continue to make a 'click' sound on the same number on each rotation, you have successfully discovered the first digit of the code and can now move on to the next quadrant.

Once again, turn each of the remaining dials to find which one is the most difficult to rotate (in my case it was the 'B' dial). Repeat the same process you used on the first dial until you have discoveredcovered the second digit of your code (in my case, it was '1').

If you have a three-digit combination lock like the one I demonstrated, you should only have one more dial to figure out. All you will have to do now is keep constant pressure on the lock and slowly turn the remaining dial one full rotation. As you turn the dial, the last remaining digit needed for the code will match the other two you had previously discovered and the shackle should open.
