Design:
Step 1: Tools and materials
The work is made of wood:
- Saws: Table saw to make long cuts, cutting saw to make cross cuts. You can also use a circular saw with guides instead.
- Sanding: I used a belt sander to clean up the cuts and did all the final sanding by hand.
- Templates: I made the stencils by engraving masked wood on the laser cutter, but this could also be done by printing the stencils in an inkjet and spray gluing them on. The engraving saved me the soldering iron burning step, which would be done by tracing the text with a soldering iron to burn the text. Another option for text would be to use letter transfers or just make exact text and use the stencil as a stencil for the acrylic paint.
- Wood: I used some leftover maple I found at the store, but any hardwood would do just fine.
Step 2: Cut the pieces

After I had etched my templates into the wood, I used the table saw and saw to cut the pieces. If you are using a soldering iron or paint to stamp, I would recommend doing this before cutting the pieces. It's easier to do delicate work on larger pieces.
The sticks measure a little over 18″ wide, so the calendar takes up a lot of space on the wall; It may be worth reducing it a bit depending on the wall you want to place it on.
Step 3: Assemble the mounting piece

The base has 3 layers: the base piece, the spacers (same thickness as the sticks with the text), and the top chevron pieces that point to the text in the center.
There is no contact with the final grain here, so just align and glue the pieces carefully. The most important thing is to make sure the sticks fit perfectly between the spacers while being able to slide back and forth.
Step 4: Key Holes

To hang the piece on the wall, I decided to drill some quick holes. I started with disc-shaped cutouts in 1/8″ plywood, cutting them on the band saw. This gives the screw in the wall something to hold onto.
Next, drill holes using drill bits to make cavities for the screws. After gluing the discs, I drilled another hole under the top of the slots in the discs to allow the screws to enter the holes.
Step 5: Finished piece

With this quick and easy project (about 4 hours total with no glue drying time), watch the days go by in style.
