Step 1: Locate a fruitful cactus

Originally from the arid south, the prickly pear is an easily distinguishable plant. Often adorned with the red/purple fruits on top of the pears and for brief periods, beautiful flowers on top of them.

Point the end of the torch at the fruit, squeeze the handle and ignite the hate of that cactus! Apply to all sides. This may only take 3-4 seconds... But to be safe, I usually give it a good 10.

Once this has been achieved, the fruit should pose no further threat.

Step 5: Choose the fruit cut or turn

As you can see, the thorns are gone. At this point you can cut the fruit (what I'm doing in the picture) or twist it or break it off the pad. The riper you find the fruit, the easier it will be to remove it without a knife.

Step 6: Cut it and enjoy!

There are two camps on how to do this. I usually just cut out the center myself and eat it from the skin as seen in the pictures above. The most visually appealing method is to peel off the skin as you would an apple by taking a knife and cutting strips until there is nothing left. One way or another, you have your prize.

There are semiinside, crunchy but swallowable if made in small quantities. The flavor reminds me of raspberries, sweet and spicy. Be careful what you touch while doing this, as the purple juice will stain anything you hold dear.
