Learn How to Build a Cool Concrete Cube of LED Lights, it's very simple, but quite eye-catching and I think it would be the perfect accent or night light. Concrete is very fun to use and of course you can vary the design according to your preferences and add color, you can change the size of the molds, whatever you want and how you want.

It's a pretty easy project and you don't need too many tools to work on it!

Step 1: Electronics

For this project, I am going to use these 5 volt LED strip lights. These are really cool because you can power them with a regular 5 volt phone charger.

Here is a 12 volt strip on the right for comparison, and there we have three lights in series and each connection is a parallel connection, while on the 5 volt strip they are all parallel with only one light and resistance per section.

Step 2: Micro USB

I'm going to use a micro USB, and these are very small. This is what you need to be able to plug in any phone charger. Now, these have multiple pins because the middles carry information, but I only have to deal with the ones that are positive and negative at the ends.

First of all, I'm soldering the micro usb to a cable to connect to the lights, and they are so small and hard to see! It took a little time to get it right. But this is what it looks like everything is connected.

I also put on shrink wrap to completely protect the connection and the cable, because this is going to be inside the concrete!

Step 3: Lexan

Next I'm cutting some Lexan into strips, and this is for the middle section of the lamp. I made them 1 1/2 inches or 3.8 cm tall, and the entire lamp will measure 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches (90 x 90 x 90 mm). To frost the glass, I sanded the pieces with fine sandpaper, but it could also be sprayed with frosted paint. Then I mixed some epoxy and glued the sides together to form a square.

Step 4: Molds

Now, let's move on to the concrete molds. I'm just using some plywood here, so I have some pieces cut out that I'm just drilling and screwing together. To protect the plywood from moisture and make it a little easier to separate from the concrete, I used gloss paint.

Step 5: Concrete

It's time to mix some concrete! But first, remember this little micro usb cable? I'm putting tape on the end of the connection to protect it.

Then I'm mixing the concrete, and this is actually a mortar mix that is softer than traditional concrete and has no gravel or stones.

Step 6: Assembling the blocks

So I have two molds, one for the top and one for the bottom. First placing a layer of concrete. Then, placing the usb cable horizontally, with the tape covered with the usb opening against the plywood. I then put a little more concrete on top to set it in place and cover to the edge, but made sure the wires were pointing directly toward the center.

Then repeat with the upper mold, which is the same but without the cable.

Once dry, I carefully unscrewed the molds and opened the wood at the bottom, and I had my blocks.

Step 7: Testing

Now I actually did this a few times, experimenting with different humidities first, and I know dry concrete is supposed to be stronger, but I liked the moister concrete in terms of the look, a little softer.

On my third try here, I also placed the Lexan square into the wet concrete to create an inlay, and that made the plastic square sit better once dry without many gaps.

Step 8: Sanding

Once I had the blocks, I sanded them, using a sander first, and the dryer blocks needed more sanding. But then I moved on to sanding by hand, and I also discovered that the blocks made with wetter concrete didn't need as much sanding, they were already pretty smooth, apart from a few sharp corners.

Step 9: Connecting the LEDs

Now the next step here was to solder on the strip led to the wire coming from the concrete. And just test here to make sure everything works.

Now to secure the lights in the middle of the block, I simply used hot glue and glued the strips on top of each other. And then just put it all together.

Step 10: Legs

To make sure the concrete base doesn't scratch the table top, I'll cut some leather circles for the legs and then just hot glue them on.

Step 11: Ready!

I also cut out some paper that I glued to the inside of the plastic square, and this is because I didn't really want to see any of the individual lights, and the paper muffled it even more, so it just glowed.

Once everything looked good, I epoxied the plastic square for the concrete pieces. I also put shellac on the concrete to seal it.

And there it is. To turn on the light, you can plug in a 5 volt power banks to make it portable and use anywhere, or you can plug it into any standard phone charger or your computer.
