Leather Book Cover with Pyrography, here I will show you how to measure, cut, sew and burn a leather design to cover your book. Very simple and direct to do it. I chose a nice light colored vegetable tanned leather for the exterior and purple suede for the interior parts.
Most of the time in this project is pyrography...
Materials:
- Leather (a little more than the outside of your book plus purple suede for interiors)
- UHU glue or a leather glue.
- Ribbons
- Nylon sewing thread
- Thin card board, chip board or even paper for the pattern
Tools:
- Pinknife
- Cutting board
- Tool for burning wood or leather
- Sewing machine (it doesn't have to be industrial if your leather is soft)
- Leather sewing needle
- Fabric tape measure
- Lighter
Step 1: Measurements

You need two measurements:
- 1 Up and down on the front of the book
- 2 turns from the edge of the cover to the other edge of the cover
Step 2: Make the pattern

For printed books:
- Take your two measurements and add 7/16″ to each
For hardcover:
- Take your two measurements and add 9/16″ to each
- Cut the cardboard piece perfectly square (90 degrees on each corner) according to your measurements.
Step 3: Cut the leather

You can cut a piece of leather for your outer cover if you want a solid color.
I wanted an accent that will be incorporated into the design later.
Follow the photos on how to complete the missing corner. Make sure you sew everything together before moving on to the next step
Step 4: Cut and glue fins

Cut two pieces for your inner fins that measure the height of your pattern by the width you want. Mine were 5″ wide.
You can use a pencil on the back of the leather for your measurements.
Stick onto the cover, making a thin layer of glue around the outer edges. Just use enough to hold it in place until you sew it.
Let dry.
Step 5: Sew

Starting with what will be the bottom back corner of your book, sew around the cover about 3/16″ from the edge.
Be sure to re-stitch where you start and when you finish.
Trim the thread about 3/8″ out and melt the ends. with a lighter.
Everything done with a lid. Try it. If it doesn't fit, it's a shame. Start again...
Step 6: Burn

Here's the time-consuming part.
You can draw on a piece of paper to plan your design and then use a scratch punch to transfer the image to the leather.
I'm just going for that. Practice first.
Take some time to plan where you want to go with your design. Do not stop the leather burner from moving because it will make a hole.
To shade, scribble lightly back and forth as if you were using a pencil. Practice makes perfect! Greetings!
