How to make your own liquid fertilizers

Why not try to recover the nutrients and at the same time make the weed seeds inert?

Materials you need to make liquid fertilizers:

• A container (in my case, I used a 45-gallon plastic barrel)
• Weeds (there is no shortage of those!)
• Water

Step 1: Gather your materials

• As I said, I used a 45 gallon plastic barrel, found in a container, originally a container for mortar plasticizer.
• I have a big garden so I wanted a big container, if you want to do less use a smaller one
• I washed the barrel just to make sure there was nothing nasty in it
• Weeds, try to find deeply rooted things, thistles are great, but also, dandelions etc., dig up everything including the root.
• You can also use other “weed-free” plants with deep roots like Comfrey

Step 2: Fill the barrel and add water

• Fill the barrel with weeds and fill it with water.
• Cover and leave for at least 2 weeks

Step 3: Stinking

• After 2 weeks you end up with this slightly smelly tea (or soup), the smell isn't that bad - you won't want it in your house, but it's fine a few meters away!
• Water this soup 15 to 1 and then water your plants about once a week
• Refill the keg when you're done for the day and it will be back to full power in a few days.
• I change the weeds approximately every 4-6 months, the old ones are almost completely decomposed and can now go to the compost.

This process releases all the good nutrients into the water so you get the following (among others)

• Nitrogen
• Phosphorous
• Potassium
• Calcium
• Sulfur
• Manganese
• Magnesium, etc.

It also did wonders for my citrus trees, which were thin and sparse and are now big and bushy.

Some people have commented about the seed heads decomposing, I usually get my weeds before they have gone to seed, but if you think the seed heads may still be viable I advise burning the weeds after removing them from the soup.

I used about 7 lira (70 mix) for an acre, it promotes grass growth and because the soil is richer, the weeds don't seem to like it (I think they prefer worse conditions) Once you have sprayed your grass, keep livestock away from it for 10 days to allow the grass to grow and any nastiness to dissipate. Ideally spray before a storm if possible.
