Plywood Plank Roofing, Shiplap is very trendy now, but it actually refers to the cut of the board. These boards have things called rabbets on each end so they fit together to keep water out.
Supplies
Planks, on the other hand, can be made from several different wood sources and simply stacked on top of each other. Planks don't fit together perfectly like shiplap, so they don't look as good, but shiplap is much more expensive.
4mm plywood sheets cost less than $7 in Japan and I needed to buy 6. The only problematic part was cutting the plywood sheets into planks.
Materials

- 4mm plywood cut into 10cm planks. (furring and planking)
- Roof sealant
- Screws
- Cemedime Super XG Glue
- Watco oil finish
Step 1: before the photos

This ceiling is actually a false ceiling which is just a recessed ceiling hanging below the original hallway ceiling suspended by a wooden frame.
The original ceiling is the bottom of the second floor and Shaquille O'Neal won't be visiting anytime soon, so there's no need to have the ceiling that high.
He's tall too. Like a Seth Rogan-Snoop Dogg slumber party. I just added the plywood planks to the already built false ceiling frame.
Step 2: Remove the wallpaper

When removing wallpaper, the paper itself comes off easily, but the backing is difficult to remove. It's a challenging nightmare. If the wallpaper's backing were a person, it would be the Joker. I put on my bat suit and removed the backing with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. The whole house smelled like a pickle factory.
Be sure to cover the floor to protect it from the wallpaper backing. Spraying it makes it easy to scrape off, but it also makes the glue tacky again and the paper will dry to the floor.
I did the roof in sections, stopping to seal. I used a water-based roof sealant with moisture-resistant, anti-fungal and algae-resistant properties.
Step 3: The First Section

I used 4mm thin plywood for the furring and planking. The furring acts as a nailer for the boards and I used thin plywood, because I didn't want to lose too much height in the hallway and thin plywood is lightweight so it's easy to glue.
I used Cemedime Super XG to glue the boards to the furring. It's almost like contact cement and bonds in about 1 minute. I also used screws on the ends of the boards.
*The thinner the boards, the more likely they are to warp or bow. Flushing is important and you want as much of the board in contact with it as possible.
«Why glue?»
I didn't want visible nails or screw heads.
«Why flush?»
I didn't want to glue the boards directly to the ceiling.
I attached the furring through the wood ceiling frame with screws.
Paint or stain?
I stained the board with a medium brown oil stain. After this first section, I began staining the planks once they were in place. I wanted a lighter color, but I changed my mind once I saw it.
It's as easy as that!
Step 4: Photo time

I used 1x4 for the false beams. These are attached to the roof frame. It is best to paint them, before placing them and the screw holes are just filled with wood putty, sanded and painted. I also trimmed around the hallway.
That's all! Pretty impressive for a stack of 4mm plywood.
The tedious parts:
- Cutting the plywood
- Stick it to the screed
Cemedime glue works like contact cement, but you need to apply pressure for about 90 seconds. Rough on the arms after lifting a couple. Next time, I'd cut a piece of wood to hold it up
