Weight Bench (5 Positions plus Flat/Incline/Bench), if you want to have a new weight bench, but don't want to spend a lot of money, then you might consider making it yourself.
I decided to make a multi-position flat/incline bench using a 4x4 post as a base.
This bench doubles as a patio seat, so I don't have to hide/put it away after every workout.
Please note that the dimensions of this bench will not be suitable for everyone; It will depend on the height of the person using the weight bench. The bench is approximately 3.75 feet long, which is an average size.
Plan and measurements:

NOTE: This construction is not designed for heavy lifting.
Materials you need:
- 12 Pieces of 4' 3/4' Plywood or Solid Wood
- 3 foot 1x2 lumber
- 8-foot 2×2 lumber
- 8ft 4×4 Wood Posts
- 1 8″ Screw and Nut (#10)
- 2 3″ Screw and Nut (#8)
- 4 Screw and nut (#10)
- 4 12″ bolts/screw
- 8 Nylon Washers (#10)
- 14 Flat Washers (#10)
- 4-3 inch long screws
- 4 foot rubber band
- Some nails and wood glue.
- Wood finish and protective polyurethane sealer (optional)
Tools you need:
- Circular saw
- Miter saw (optional)
- Electric drill with drill bits, Forstner bits and similar (used to counter sink screws)
- Wood chisel
- Socket wrench/pliers
- Hammer
- Sandpaper
#1:
- Cut all wood pieces to proper lengths (see detailed weight bench plan/illustration).
#2:

- If you noticed from the plan/illustration of the bench, a simple groove joint was used to join the base and wooden legs of the bench.
- Use your circular saw and make several passes to remove the unnecessary part, finish with a wood chisel (as shown below).
#3:

- Use a generous amount of wood glue for all joints; then fix it with a lag screw.
- Thread the head of the lag screw so it is flush. See image below.
#4:

- Next, drill a hole in one end of the (2) 2x2 lumber (the hole should be large enough to accommodate the #10 bolt), this will be used for the adjustable back support.
- Then drill a straight hole through the support side of the table (please refer to the bench plan/illustration).
- Use 8″ (#10) screw and nut to attach the adjustable backrest bracket to the top of the bench.
- Place a nylon washer between the flat metal washers to minimize friction during operation.
#5:

- Do the same with the swing arm.
#6:

- The 12″ bolt (#10) is secured to the end of the swing arm using 4 bolt nuts.
- Again, refer to the bench plan/illustration where to cut the notches in the table support; This is where the swing arm bracket will rest during use.
- If you prefer, you can remove some notches, thus limiting the adjustment angle.
#7:

- Due to the proximity of the second notch to the first notch, I use a small metal L-bracket to give it more strength.
- The second image shows what it should look like after the adjustable backrest bracket and swing arm are screwed into place.
- Note that everything should be flush with the work table support when in neutral/flat position.
#8:

- Next, attach the bench seat and backrest with nails and wood glue.
- Give it a good sanding to remove any rough edges.
#9:

- Use rubber feet to prevent the bench from sliding during use.
#10:

After some finishing touches (wood finish and 2 coats of polyurethane finish), this is what it looks like. Greetings!
