A former spy was refused a visa to give evidence at a royal commission, marking a fresh twist in Australia's ongoing security and legal landscape. This development came as part of a busy news day that also included updates on the South China Sea, teacher strikes, and the prime minister's stance on a gas export tax.
Former Spy's Visa Refusal and Royal Commission Impact
The identity of the former intelligence officer remains undisclosed, but the refusal to grant a visa has raised questions about international cooperation and witness protection. The royal commission, which is investigating sensitive matters, now faces delays as legal teams seek alternatives. Australia's Foreign Affairs Department declined to comment on specific cases, citing national security protocols.

Australia's Stance on South China Sea Patrols
Australia is not ruling out stepping up joint patrols of the South China Sea following what it called “destabilising” missile testing in the region. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasised the need for a rules‑based order, while avoiding direct confrontation with China. Defence analysts note that increased patrols could signal a shift in Australia's strategic posture in the Indo‑Pacific.
Teacher Strikes Disrupt Victorian Schools
Students in Victoria were kept at home as a second teacher strike disrupted public schools, leaving thousands of families scrambling for alternative arrangements. The Australian Education Union cited workload and pay concerns. The government has urged both sides to return to bargaining, but no breakthrough is expected this week.
Gas Tax Debate and Fair Work Court Announcement
Anthony Albanese has seemingly shut down prospects of a new tax on gas exports, stating that a Labor party platform document calling for Australians to get “a fair share” from natural resources does not mandate such a tax. In the same press conference, the prime minister announced a new Fair Work court, which he says will streamline workplace disputes and reduce backlogs.
Unemployment Holds Steady at 4.4%
Australia's unemployment rate held at 4.4% in June after a big jump in the number of employed Australians. The labour force participation rate also rose, suggesting that more people are entering the job market. However, wage growth remains subdued, and the Reserve Bank is watching closely for inflationary pressures.
| Month | Unemployment Rate | Employment Change |
|---|---|---|
| April | 4.1% | +28,000 |
| May | 4.0% | +39,000 |
| June | 4.4% | +50,000 |
