The musical theatre industry in Australia is facing a crisis, with high-profile shows like Annie, Back to the Future, and Beetlejuice closing early or canceling tours. This intimate production at Melbourne’s fortyfivedownstairs proves that powerful storytelling and artistic integrity can thrive even when commercial juggernauts stumble.
The State of Musical Theatre in Australia
Large-scale productions have struggled to sustain audience numbers, leading to early closures and financial losses. This has cast a pall over the profession and spooked potential investors. However, the narrative is not entirely bleak. Homegrown productions are flourishing, demonstrating that demand for quality theatre remains strong.

Grey Gardens: A Case Study in Artistic Success
Adapted from a 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens tells the story of a reclusive mother and daughter living in squalor. The musical received mixed reviews off-Broadway in 2006, but time has been kinder to it. Under Tyran Parke’s direction, the production shines with wit and tragic impulse, featuring an extraordinary cast led by Helen Dallimore.
