Andy Burnham prepares to become the UK's sixth prime minister in a decade, emphasizing that Britain must be honest about the challenges it faces as he introduces measures to ease the cost of living and expand North Sea fossil fuel drilling. The Labour leader is set to go to Buckingham Palace on Monday to accept the role from the king, marking a pivotal shift in UK governance.
Burnham's First Steps as Prime Minister
Burnham is expected to begin making cabinet appointments in the afternoon, with many ministers and allies still uncertain about their roles. Key figures like Shabana Mahmood are widely believed to become chancellor, while Ed Miliband is tipped for foreign secretary. The chief whip, Jonathan Reynolds, is also seen as a strong candidate for business secretary, overseeing a department that incorporates science and technology.

Key Cabinet Appointments and Challenges
Former cabinet minister Lou Haigh is expected to lead the Cabinet Office, while former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner is being considered for health secretary, though sources say she may need persuasion given her focus on devolution and regional inequality. Burnham's first Downing Street address will strike an optimistic yet realistic tone about the problems facing Britain.
Policy Blitz: Cost of Living and Energy
Burnham is likely to announce measures to bring down energy bills and potentially target bus fares to help people's finances. He is also preparing to open the door to more oil and gas drilling in the North Sea in existing areas, despite backlash from environmental campaigners and some MPs. This move reflects his commitment to balancing economic needs with energy security.

|---|---|---|
| Cost of Living | Reduce energy bills and bus fares | Immediate financial relief for households |
| North Sea Drilling | Expand drilling in existing areas | Boost domestic energy supply, but faces environmental criticism |
