The cyclospora outbreak that has sickened thousands in the U.S. has been met with a response that a former FDA official calls near catastrophic mismanagement. Frank Yiannas, deputy commissioner for food policy under both Trump and Biden, accused the administration of widespread confusion and lack of strong federal leadership.
The Cyclospora Outbreak: What Went Wrong
Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, leads to intestinal illness with explosive diarrhea. The FDA initially identified lettuce from Taylor Farms, a Taco Bell supplier, as the source—only to backtrack later. Taylor Farms claims the FDA apologized, but the agency denies this, maintaining strong evidence linking the supplier.

Key Failures in the Government Response
- Mixed messages from federal agencies caused public confusion.
- The FDA rushed to name a source without solid proof, then reversed course.
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declared the outbreak “under control” while the FDA expanded investigations to 7,400 potential cases across nine states.
- Yiannas called for an independent review, warning the situation is approaching a catastrophic level.
Comparing Cyclospora to Previous Foodborne Outbreaks
| Outbreak | Year | Cases | Response Time | FDA Accountability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclospora (current) | 2025 | 7,400+ | Slow, backtracked | Criticized |
| Listeria (cantaloupe) | 2011 | 147 | Rapid recall | Praised |
| Salmonella (peanut butter) | 2008-2009 | 714 | Moderate | Improved later |
Why This Matters for Food Safety
The mishandling of the cyclospora outbreak underscores gaps in the FDA's outbreak detection and communication. Yiannas emphasized that a lack of strong federal leadership and mixed messages from agencies eroded public trust. The FDA's apology dispute with Taylor Farms further complicates the narrative.
FAQ
What is cyclospora?

How many people have been affected by the current outbreak?
As of the latest reports, over 4,000 confirmed cases exist, with the FDA investigating up to 7,400 potential cases across nine U.S. states.
What role did Taylor Farms play?
The FDA linked lettuce from Taylor Farms to the outbreak, leading to a recall, but later backtracked. Taylor Farms claims the FDA apologized; the FDA denies this.
Is the outbreak under control?
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said it is under control, but the FDA continues expanding its investigation, and critics say the response remains chaotic.
The cyclospora crisis serves as a stark reminder of the need for transparent, science-based food safety protocols. As the investigation continues, consumers should wash produce thoroughly and stay informed through official updates.
