Historic Post-Brexit Deal Removes Gibraltar Border Fence 2026

The historic post-Brexit deal has removed the Gibraltar border fence, ending over a century of physical separation and border checks for residents, tourists, and Spanish workers. This landmark agreement, signed in Brussels, marks a new era of cooperation between Spain, the UK, and Gibraltar.

Key Details of the Post-Brexit Agreement

The deal eliminates border controls and customs checks at the Gibraltar-Spain frontier, creating a fluid border for the first time since 1908. Spain now manages Schengen controls at Gibraltar's airport and port, ensuring seamless travel for the 15,000 Spanish workers who cross daily.

Impact on Local Communities

The removal of the fence benefits the 40,000 residents of Gibraltar and the 300,000 people in the Campo de Gibraltar region of Andalucía. Long rush-hour queues, once a source of tension, are now history. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called it the closing of an "open wound."

Economic and Political Significance

This post-Brexit deal strengthens ties between the UK and Spain, boosting tourism and cross-border commerce. Gibraltar's economy, heavily reliant on Spanish labor, will see reduced friction. The treaty does not affect Gibraltar's British sovereignty but opens a new phase of shared prosperity.
