Keir Starmer's farewell as UK prime minister marks a dignified departure from a premiership defined by swift defenestration after Labour's catastrophic local election results in May. His valedictory week offered rare moments of reflection on his achievements, from steadfast support for Ukraine to avoiding entanglement in Donald Trump's illegal war on Iran.
Keir Starmer's Legacy: Ukraine and Hillsborough Law
Sir Keir's record in corralling international support for Ukraine earned him a minute's applause from leaders of the "coalition of the willing" in Paris. This foreign policy success, coupled with his role in drafting the Hillsborough law, highlights his dedication to public service. Andy Burnham paid tribute in the House of Commons for the bill that finally became law this week.

Domestic Struggles and a Passive Premiership
Despite these wins, Keir Starmer's premiership will be remembered for its rapid decline. As a passive, remote leader, he presided over an administration that failed to communicate a coherent direction. Voters who delivered Labour a landslide two years ago expected Labour-style solutions, but tax pledges and rigid fiscal rules led to U-turns, like the controversial winter fuel allowance debacle.
| Achievement | Impact |
|---|---|
| Ukraine support | International applause and strengthened alliances |
| Hillsborough law | Justice for victims and legal reform |
| Winter fuel allowance | Emblematic of policy U-turns and public backlash |

- Dignified exit despite brutal defenestration after local elections.
- Foreign policy wins on Ukraine and Iran contrasted with domestic failures.
- Passive leadership style alienated backbenchers and the public.
- Fiscal rigidity undermined Labour's mandate for change.
