Manchester United ticket suspensions have triggered fierce backlash from supporter groups, who accuse the club of treating loyal fans as suspects in a crackdown on illegal ticket reselling. The club recently contacted fans who used six or more devices to access their accounts, demanding explanations and photo ID. This has led to a joint statement from the Fans' Forum, Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST), The 1958, and five other groups, calling for a pause on suspensions and a fair, transparent process.
The Club's Anti-Touting Measures
Manchester United has taken a hard line against professional touts and automated purchasing systems that exploit supporters. The club's email to affected fans stated: "Following a detailed review of activity across our ticketing and digital platforms, we have identified sustained activity ... which may indicate a breach of the club’s ticketing terms and conditions." The policy aims to prevent illegal reselling, but supporters argue that innocent families using multiple devices to coordinate ticket purchases are being unfairly targeted.

Supporter Groups Respond
In a joint statement, the groups said: "Longstanding supporters who have followed Manchester United for decades, often across multiple generations of the same family, should never feel they are being treated as suspects without clear evidence, due process or a meaningful opportunity to respond." They called on the club to suspend further actions and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Key Demands from Fan Groups
- Immediate pause on all season ticket suspensions and cancellations.
- Transparent criteria for identifying suspected touts.
- A fair appeals process with clear evidence requirements.
- Direct engagement with supporter representatives before any future actions.
Comparison of Club vs Fan Group Perspectives
| Aspect | Club's Position | Fan Groups' Position |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Stop illegal reselling and protect ticket integrity | Protect loyal supporters while catching genuine touts |
| Method | Algorithmic detection of multiple device usage | Manual review and due process before suspension |
| Evidence | Use of six or more devices as red flag | Insufficient to prove touting; family use common |
| Outcome | Immediate suspension pending investigation | "Ban first, ask questions later" culture |
The table illustrates a fundamental disagreement over fairness. While both sides condemn professional touts, the current approach has created widespread distrust. Fans report that elderly relatives and families who share accounts for convenience are now at risk of losing their season tickets.
What Happens Next?
The stalemate continues as Manchester United has not publicly responded to the joint statement. Supporters are advised to review the club's ticketing terms and ensure they comply to avoid suspensions. Meanwhile, the Fans' Forum is pushing for an independent review of the ticketing system.
