The measles deaths in Pennsylvania have been excluded from official US health counts, raising questions about transparency and accuracy in public health reporting. This article examines the controversy, the CDC's data, and the implications for public trust.
Key Facts About the Excluded Measles Deaths
Two measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania, including a newborn, have not been included in national counts by the CDC and HHS. This is highly unusual, according to former CDC chief medical officer Debra Houry, who noted that three measles deaths in Texas and New Mexico were counted last year.

What Did RFK Jr. Say?
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave an incorrect number of measles deaths in a Fox News interview, claiming only three deaths in a decade. He suggested the Pennsylvania deaths were 'fabricated,' a claim that has not been substantiated.
Comparison Table: Measles Deaths Reported vs. Excluded
| State | Year | Deaths Reported | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | 2025 | 2 | Counted |
| New Mexico | 2025 | 1 | Counted |
| Pennsylvania | 2025 | 2 | Excluded |
Why Does This Matter?
Accurate death counts are crucial for public health response and vaccine policy. Excluding deaths can undermine trust in health agencies and lead to misinformation. The CDC has not reported measles deaths for 2026, adding to the confusion.
Expert Insights
Dr. Houry emphasized that such exclusions are unprecedented in recent measles outbreaks. Public health experts worry that political influence may be affecting data reporting, which could have long-term consequences for disease prevention.
