MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster Rules, and 2026

The MLS new commissioner priorities are now under the spotlight as Larry Berg prepares to take over from Don Garber. With a sprawling league and a self-proclaimed challenger brand, Berg faces critical decisions on broadcast deals, roster rules, and competitive balance. This article breaks down the five key areas that will define his tenure.

1. Charting a Broadcast Future Beyond Apple

The current streaming deal with Apple, which nets $250 million per year, expires after the 2028-29 season. Berg will need to evaluate whether to renew, renegotiate, or pivot to traditional networks. The early gamble on Apple brought innovation but also limited reach, as streaming adoption remains lower than cable.

Data shows that MLS broadcasts averaged 120,000 unique viewers per game in July 2025, a rare public metric. The league must decide if this audience size justifies the partnership or if a hybrid approach could boost visibility.

2. Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

MLS's unique roster rules, including designated players and allocation money, have always been a balancing act. Berg must address whether to loosen or tighten spending constraints to attract global stars while ensuring parity. The league's growth depends on making every franchise competitive.

3. Expanding Fan Engagement and Relevance

As a challenger brand, MLS seeks greater respect in the global soccer landscape. Berg will need to enhance fan experiences, both in stadiums and digitally. This includes improving ancillary content, which has dwindled since the Apple deal began.

4. Navigating the 2026 World Cup Momentum

The 2026 World Cup, hosted partly in the US, presents a golden opportunity. Berg must leverage this event to convert casual fans into MLS supporters. Strategic marketing and grassroots programs will be essential to capitalize on the soccer surge.

5. Financial Sustainability and Growth

With expansion fees and sponsorship revenue rising, financial health is crucial. Berg will oversee new stadium projects, media rights renewals, and player investment. Balancing profitability with on-field quality is a delicate task.
