North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the Ukraine war. This announcement, which increases earlier estimates of 30,000 soldiers, underscores the deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow. Zelenskyy also called on South Korea to provide air defence support, highlighting Ukraine's critical shortage of high-end interceptors.

North Korea's Expanding Military Role in Russia

The deployment of up to 50,000 North Korean soldiers represents a major boost to Russia's manpower, which has suffered heavy casualties in the ongoing conflict. Kyiv has confirmed that North Korean missiles have been found on Ukrainian territory, and intelligence reports indicate a North Korean missile unit is already moving to western Russia with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers. This follows an earlier deployment of 14,000 troops to Kursk in 2024, where thousands have been wounded or killed.

Weapons and Supplies: Quality Concerns

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, ballistic missiles, and multiple-launch rocket systems. However, Russian milbloggers and troops have complained about the dangerously low quality of some ammunition, which has led to malfunctions and reduced effectiveness. Despite these issues, the sheer volume of supplies has helped sustain Russia's offensive operations.

Ukraine's Plea for Air Defence Support

Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's urgent need for air defence systems, particularly to counter Russian ballistic missiles, which are extremely difficult to intercept without advanced systems like the US Patriot. He expressed hope for South Korean support, stating, "We are ready to work on the drone deal and other areas as well." Ukrainian diplomats are in active contact with Seoul to finalize potential agreements.

Potential Turkey Deal: ATACMS Missiles

In a related development, Ukraine is poised to purchase 70 ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles from Turkey, pending US approval for the resale. This deal, revealed in US congressional documents, could provide Ukraine with additional strike capabilities, though it does not directly address the air defence gap.
