The ongoing heatwave is causing significant rail disruption in England as soil moisture deficit shrinks clay embankments, affecting train services across multiple routes. South Western Railway (SWR) has announced timetable changes from 10 August, with reduced speeds and longer journey times between Yeovil and Exeter St Davids.
Why Does Heatwave Cause Rail Disruption?
Many railway embankments in England are built on clay soil, which contracts when dry. Prolonged drought conditions reduce moisture, causing the ground to shrink and disturb track geometry. Even small shifts require trains to slow down for safety.

Affected Routes and Operators
Network Rail has imposed speed restrictions from 3 August on lines run by Great Northern in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, Greater Anglia and c2c in Essex, and the eastern end of the Elizabeth line. SWR’s West of England line is particularly vulnerable.
| Operator | Route | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| South Western Railway | Yeovil – Exeter St Davids | Trains every 2 hours; plus 27 min delays |
| Great Northern | Cambridgeshire & Norfolk | Late-night speed restrictions |
| Greater Anglia | Essex | Altered timetables |
| c2c | Essex | Altered timetables |
| Elizabeth line | Eastern London | Speed restrictions |
Key Takeaways for Passengers
- Check your operator’s website for updated timetables before travelling.
- Allow extra travel time, especially on routes affected by speed restrictions.
- Consider alternative transport or working remotely if possible.
- Stay informed about further heatwave-related disruptions.
How Long Will Rail Disruption Last?
Network Rail states restrictions will remain until the ground conditions have recovered. This depends on sufficient rainfall to rehydrate the clay soil, which may take weeks or months.
FAQ
What is soil moisture deficit (SMD)?
SMD occurs when prolonged dry weather reduces the water content in soil, causing clay to shrink and destabilise railway embankments.
Which train companies are affected by the heatwave rail disruption?
South Western Railway, Great Northern, Greater Anglia, c2c, and the Elizabeth line have announced timetable changes and speed restrictions.
When will normal rail services resume?
There is no fixed date. Services will improve once rainfall replenishes soil moisture. Check Network Rail and operator updates.
Passengers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time. The climate crisis is likely to make such heatwave-related rail disruption more frequent, urging infrastructure investment in climate resilience.
