Senate Democrats blocked the advancement of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in a dramatic protest against President Trump's resumption of hostilities with Iran. The move halts a must-pass defense bill that typically enjoys bipartisan support, highlighting deep divisions over US foreign policy.
Why Senate Democrats Blocked the NDAA
The hold-up comes amid the fiercest exchange of fire between the US and Iran in weeks. Democrats argue that Congress cannot ignore the nation's most urgent national security crisis while debating defense spending. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, "Republicans want the Senate to take up the NDAA as though none of this is happening."

All Democrats in attendance voted against the measure, denying it the 60 votes needed to clear the Senate's procedural bar. This marks a rare partisan standoff over a bill that usually passes with overwhelming margins.
Trump's Iran Policy Under Fire
President Trump earlier threatened a 20% "security" fee on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz but later backed down. However, he vowed to continue the US blockade of Iranian ports. Schumer criticized the administration's approach, saying, "Trump has no clue what he's doing in Iran. It's a recipe for utter disaster."
The war powers resolution passed last month intended to force a ceasefire, but hostilities have only escalated, leaving Democrats frustrated.
Impact on Defense Spending
The NDAA authorizes $1.15 trillion in defense spending for the upcoming fiscal year, in line with Trump's proposed budget. It also includes pay increases for military personnel. The blockade could delay funding for critical programs and troop support.

|---|---|---|
